    Jason Juno|Feb 13, 2016

HURLEY - On the second Friday in a row, Hurley buried a rival early in the game. Mercer reduced the deficit to single digits in the second half, but the Tigers didn't have an answer for the bigger Midgets, James Sukanen (6-6), who had 27 points and 16 rebounds, or guard Isaac DeCarlo, who scored 16...

  • Midgets tower over cold Red Devils

    Jason Juno|Feb 6, 2016

IRONWOOD - Hurley utilized its size advantage and held Ironwood's shooters in check to beat its rival 56-34 Friday night. One of the biggest crowds of the season was on hand for the contest, but the Midgets took them out of it early on, building leads of 7-0, 14-3 and then 29-11 at halftime. The Red Devils didn't have an answer for Hurley's bigs, especially James Sukanen, who scored 22 points. Ironwood had hoped to shoot well to help combat that deficiency, but they shot just 27 percent from...

    Feb 4, 2016

By RICHARD JENKINS [email protected] HURLEY — The saga of Gogebic-Taconite’s efforts to develop a mine site near Upson, Wis., has come to an apparent end after the company failed to make a necessary payment to Iron County to preserve the company’s lease option on county land adjacent to the proposed mine site. “They never sent the payment in for the next year ... so at this time I would say it’s probably a dead issue,” Iron County Board Chairman Joe Pinardi told the Daily Globe Tuesday. “The G-Tac saga is over as we speak because...

  • Ironwood digs out from foot of snow

    Feb 4, 2016

By RALPH ANSAMI [email protected] IRONWOOD — The sounds of plow trucks and snowblowers continued in Ironwood on Wednesday afternoon as the Gogebic Range was digging out from more than a foot of snow. Although the lake-effect snow was light, heavy drifting from north winds and temperatures in the 20s made driving treacherous. Area schools canceled classes as the snow picked up overnight and the drifting made it difficult for the plow crews to keep up with the storm. Most governmental meetings and social organization activities s...
