  • Midgets celebrate '49 state champs, Sukanen's 1,000th point

    Jason Juno|Feb 21, 2015

HURLEY - Junior James Sukanen made school history on a nostalgic night in Hurley. Sukanen became the eighth Hurley boy to score 1,000 career points as Hurley beat Butternut 62-24 Friday night. That came after Hurley honored the 1949 state champion boys basketball team. Sukanen led all scorers with 19 points and stands at 1,004 for his career. He needed 15 and his shot at the basket with about five minutes left in the first half gave him 1,000 exactly. "James is a kid, he's a hard worker, he's a... Full story

  • Cardinals win share of IC East crown, down Devils

    Pat Krause|Feb 21, 2015

WAKEFIELD - There's a first time for everything. On Friday night on their home court, the Wakefield-Marenisco girl's basketball team became co-champions of the Indianhead Conference East Division with Hurley with a 58-28 victory over Ironwood. It was the first time a Wakefield-Marenisco team has shared or won a title, since the Cardinals joined the Indianhead in 2011. Both W-M and the Midgets had 13-3 conference records. "I'm very satisfied with how we've played this year," W-M coach Pete Yon... Full story

  • Midgets upset No. 3 Devils

    Jason Juno|Feb 11, 2015

HURLEY - Part of Hurley's 0-5 start to the season was a 27-point loss at rival Ironwood. Part of the Midgets' turnaround - and what now is a six-game winning streak - is a 53-37 victory over Ironwood Tuesday night. The Midgets upset Ironwood, tied for third in the U.P. Class ABC poll, with a monster third quarter, holding the Red Devils to just three points and scoring 19 themselves. "What a great win for us," Hurley coach Mike Swartz said. "We got down seven (at the half), we didn't hang our... Full story

  • Midgets upset 2nd-place Cardinals

    Jason Juno|Jan 31, 2015

HURLEY - South Shore's Blake Reijo poses quite a challenge with his outside shooting ability. Earlier in the week, Ironwood went with 6-5 Jake DiGiorgio to slow down Reijo (6-3). On Friday night, Hurley utilized 5-5 Kohl Manzanares with some help from 5-11 Colton Dowd against the Cardinal sharp shooter. Both strategies worked. The Midgets knocked off South Shore, which is in second place in the Indianhead Conference West Division, 56-42 Friday night. "I thought they did a fantastic job on h... Full story

    Pat Krause|Dec 29, 2014

The Cardinals started like gangbusters when Jacob Suzik made a 3 the hard way with a put-back and a free throw and Eric Hakamaki sank a 3-footer off the glass. The Red Devils scored the Indianhead Conference game's first 13 points in front of a large crowd at John Krznarich Gym. "It was very important; I thought we came out of the gates firing on all cylinders," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. "That really helped us, gave us confidence. • Spring Valley stifles Hurley offense

    Jason Juno|Nov 1, 2014

SPRING VALLEY, Wis.— No. 3-seed Hurley did not get a treat in its Halloween visit to No. 2 Spring Valley, losing 41-14 in Friday’s WIAA Division 6 Level 2 playoff game. The Cardinals were too fast and their passing game too good as the Midgets’ offense struggled with poor field position, false start penalties and yet another key injury, this time to senior Jake Tenlen, right off the bat. “Bottom line is we didn’t hold the ball long enough tonight to keep them off the field,” Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. “You want to make it a six-possess...

  • Midgets blank Knights

    Jason Juno|Oct 25, 2014

No. 3-seeded Hurley started the WIAA Division 6 postseason with a 37-0 shutout of No. 6 Lake Holcombe/Cornell Friday night. The Midgets played what coach Scott Erickson called their toughest schedule in his 23 years of coaching and survived with just two losses. "Our kids played at a high level tonight," Erickson said. "I think our schedule has set us up to play very well in the playoffs,...

  • Midgets lose by an extra point to Mountaineers

    Jason Juno|Oct 18, 2014

HURLEY - It was fitting that Hurley ended the regular season with another down-to-the-wire contest. A missed two-point conversion and some missed opportunities prevented the evenly-played game from ending in Hurley's favor as Iron Mountain won 23-22 Friday night. It was the fourth Hurley game this season that was decided in the final moments. Hurley finished the regular season at 7-2. With that record, the Midgets should get a first-round playoff home game in today's WIAA Division 6 seeding... Full story

The last time Hurley won the conference by itself was in 2011 when it went 5-0. "I'm very proud of our kids for accomplishing that," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. "Very, very happy. • Eagles' rally stuns Midgets

    Jason Juno|Sep 20, 2014

HURLEY - Hurley was as shocked Friday as Crystal Falls Forest Park was last week. Northland Pines came back from a 23-6 deficit to hand Hurley a 37-31 non-conference loss at Veterans Memorial Field. That came one week after the Midgets came back from a 14-6 deficit in the final 6:30 to win at Crystal Falls. This time, everything went against Hurley in the second half when a fast Pines team outscored the Midgets 31-15, including the final 19 points in the final seven minutes. • Stunner in Trojan town

    Jason Juno|Sep 13, 2014

CRYSTAL FALLS - It took 14 years, and all 48 minutes before Hurley could leave Dick Mettlach Field and Crystal Falls happy. And were they ever happy. Hurley crafted a comeback for the ages, scoring 12 unanswered points in the final 6:30 of the fourth quarter, including a one-yard touchdown run by Devin Czerneski as time expired to give Hurley the 18-14 win. Since joining the conference in 2000, Hurley had never won here. That included their last visit here when the Midgets tripled the offensive... Full story

The Midgets overcame all the hardships and outscored the Lakes 22-0 in the second half for a 28-6 Great Western Conference victory. "I'm most proud of the way the kids handled the second half after everything went bad in the first half," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. • Midgets win 9th straight Border Bowl

    Pat Krause|Aug 30, 2014

IRONWOOD - For Hurley, eight was great, but nine straight Border Bowl wins over Ironwood was even better as the Midgets rolled over the Red Devils 48-6 on a soggy Longyear Field Friday night. The series began in 1919 and the two ancient rivals have met 82 times on the gridiron. Ironwood still leads the long series 48-31-3 but has not defeated Hurley since 2005, when they went to the state quarterfinals that year. Ironwood pulled within 14-6 at the end of the first quarter, but Hurley scored thre... Full story

    Jason Juno|Aug 23, 2014

SHELL LAKE, Wis. — Hurley gave Shell Lake a rude welcome to the 2014 football season, shelling the Lakers 52-0 Friday night. Three Midgets – Nick Fink, Devin Czerneski and Adam Hendricks - had two touchdowns apiece as Hurley piled up 469 yards on the ground. The deep Midgets didn’t have much trouble with Shell Lake’s no-huddle offense, even on a humid night. “They’re running no-huddle spread all over the place and we had that depth that we could roll through our defensive line to keep some p... Full story
