GLISSON [email protected] BESSEMER — The Bessemer city council voted Monday evening to accept responsibility for a pending $9,222 state grant that would provide surveying funds for the continuation of the Western Gateway Trail. The council also voted to approve a related contract with Coleman Engineering Company of Ironwood, since it is engineering the trail project. In Iron County, the elections are for town offices and school boards, as well as a pair of seats on the Montreal city council. There’s also a referendum on the Mercer ballot concerning the approval of an application for a half percent tax Premiere Resort Area Tax. MERCER — Long before the region was settled fur traders and early inhabitants used Iron County’s Flambeau Trail. IRONWOOD, Mich. - Betty Ruth Oberlander, 94, passed away on March 2, 2019, at Aspirus Ironwood Hospital in Ironwood. Betty was born on March 13, 1924, to Emil and Esther (Freberg) Baron and grew up with five siblings in Montreal, Wis. She graduated from J. E. Murphy High School in Hurley. She married George Oberlander after his return from the service in World War II and settled in Ironwood in 1946. Betty and George had two children, Susan and George. Laguna said from October 2012 through June of 2018 the city of Hurley experienced 16 sanitation overflows resulting in approximately 10 million gallons of waste-water being pumped on the ground. “These discharges end up in the Montreal River, which then discharges into Lake Superior,” he said.
