WAKEFIELD, Mich. - Waino E. Salli, 96, a longtime resident of Wakefield, passed away peacefully in his sleep early Tuesday morning, Jan. 15, 2019. Waino was born during a snowstorm on Feb. 24, 1922, at the family farmhouse in Kimball, Wis., the oldest son of Gust and Olga (Lehtola) Salli. He was the third of nine siblings to Finnish immigrants. BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners this week went on record as supporting the purchase of land from Pat Steiger for the next phase of the Iron Belle Trail. The non-motorized trail will extend from Bessemer to Ramsay. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources sought the letter of support from the county.
