IRONWOOD — Jim Betchek, a former teacher and coach at Luther L. Wright High School, passed away Sept. 22 at the age of 85. Many in this area may not know or remember Betchek; he lived in Ironwood from 1956-61. But while he was here, he made quite an impression. Mostly, he left his mark in coaching high school sports such as football, basketball and track and field. And it was in basketball, where he was a head coach, that he left his biggest imprint. Betchek was a star athlete at Berrien Springs High School in many sports during the 1940s...
IRONWOOD — There’s only one thing that Ironwood’s Katie Piispanen likes better than playing tennis. And that’s winning when she plays tennis. “I love the competition and I try my best to win,” Piispanen said. “That’s my motivation. I don’t like to lose matches.” Piispanen’s journey into the tennis world began when she was in sixth grade and coach Annette Burchell ran a tennis camp at Luther L. Wright High School. It peaked her interest and she became hooked on the sport. It didn’t take Piispa...

But we came out and played real well. We did what we had to do. We put pressure on them right off the bat.” They Wykons had several advantages over the Red Devil...

IRONWOOD — A Red Devils-Gremlins matchup on Friday the 13th could not have been more fitting. Despite having 291 total yards of offense to Houghton’s 189, it was four turnovers with poor timing that burned the Red Devils. The Red Devils’ defense kept Ironwood in the game to stay within striking dista...

WAUSAU, Wis. — Two goal line stands in the first half by Hurley kept Boscobel from making things more interesting and off the scoreboard all together. The Midgets started the season with a 34-0 victory over the Bulldogs, who despite losing their 23rd straight game, made Hurley work for a lot of what it got. The Midgets also had to work through losing running back/tight end/defensive back Jake Colassaco, who sprained his ankle in the first half. “We had to work our way through some things tod...

KINGSFORD — At 5-2, Ironwood freshman Rachel Hudacek doesn’t stand very high, but she jumps high, higher than anyone else in Division 2 in the Upper Peninsula on Saturday. Cole Stevens picked up Ironwood’s other U.P. championship, with a 12-0 mark in the pole vault. “She’s not very tall, but she’s got great spr...
