BESSEMER - In the Bessemer Hometown Run held on Saturday, the top overall male runners were Andy Warren, of Ironwood, in the 10K division and Sam Dean, of Ironwood, in the two mile run. Hannah Palmeter, of Bessemer, and Lily Wieringa, of Bessemer, were the top overall female runners in the 10K and the two mile divisions respectively. IRONWOOD - The Northern Michigan Girls overpowered the Northern Wisconsin Girls team 87-68 in the inaugural game of the Kiwanis Classic Border Bash All-Star Game in the steamy GCC Lindquist Center on Tuesday night. HURLEY - As part of the 29th annual Memorial Day Weekend ATV Rally, Sunday featured the Mud Pit Races, which drew a large group of spectators on both sides of the pit. The races were held at the Trailhead on the Iron Horse Trail under sunny skies with temperatures in the high 70s. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - With a winter of white outside, all Packer fans could see was green and gold inside when the Green Bay Packer Tailgate Tour rolled into Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort on Wednesday. According to Bob Tervonen, close to 500 Packer fans purchased tickets for the event that will raise close to $15,000 for Ironwood Township and Ironwood volunteer fire departments. WAKEFIELD - The fifth annual Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department Ice Fishing Contest was held at Sunday Lake and the Wakefield V.F.W. on Saturday during Michigan's Free Fishing Weekend. The contest brought out 661 ice fishermen, including 459 adults and 202 children. Each one went home with a door prize. IRONWOOD — On Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, the women's basketball team of Gogebic Community College returned home from the Anoka Classic in Coon Rapids, Minn. with an 0-2 record. IRONWOOD - The UW-Superior JV Yellowjackets stung Gogebic Community College 85-82 in overtime at the Lindquist Center on Wednesday night. IRONWOOD - Fans from far and wide gathered in the grandstands at the Gogebic County Fairgrounds for the Pro-series U.S. Snowmobile Association races Saturday and Sunday. Among the crowd was Ron Fjerstad, father to one of the racers, Joey Fjerstad, 24, of Minneapolis. Joey Fjerstad has been racing since 2004, working his way up from stock class to championship class. IRONWOOD — In what was thought to be the most exciting race and finish in SISU Ski Fest history, Doug DeBold, of Wayzata, Minn., raced to a razor-thin win over Santiago Ocariz, of Moorhead, Minn., in the 42k Marathon-Men's Classic even though both finished in the same time of 2:24:06.
