Birchwood will now advance to the championship game to play at top-seed Northwood. "It's unfortunate someone had to lose tonight," Birchwood coach Blane Senn said. "Hurley played their butts off. They got behind, but they kept working hard and got back in i...

"They've got a good program and they are big and physical-you can tell that team has been in the weight room. They are going to give...

BESSEMER — It's tough to win many games scoring 18 points in a varsity basketball game. That happened to the Bessemer Speedgirls on Thursday night and Bessemer went down to defeat at the hands of Hancock 60-18 in a non-conference game in the House of Noise. "Hancock plays tough man-to-man defense and they do it with six girls," Bessemer coach Gerry Pelissero said. "Our girls weren't comfortable playing against that defense. By PAT KRAUSE [email protected] Some area coaches have said there have been times when graduating seniors who were good players for them would make comments that they were good high school athletes, but they didn’t think they could ever play at the college level. Recently, three young athletes from our area have shattered that stereotype and even thrived in the college athletic environment. Valerie Rowe and Zack Mazurek of Bessemer and Ironwood native Hannah Palmeter recently sat down with The Daily Globe and talked about their high s...

The Speedgirls held a 36-35 lead after three quarters and it had been a close game for 24 minutes of intense basketball. But the Cardinals stepped up their game...
