Students from Washington Elementary School in Bessemer and Hurley K-12 School got their hands dirty Monday and planted flowers in their respective downtowns. ONTONAGON – Ontonagon Village Manager Joe Erickson told the Village Council Monday that engineers for a new dollar store in Ontonagon have been on the proposed site for the store and he expects a request will be made next week for a building permit to start the new structure. The new Family Dollar will be erected on M-38 across from the Ontonagon Court House and next to the former Pamida store. Friday, Judge Roy Gotham swore in Michael Findlay as prosecutor and Ontonagon County Clerk Stacy Preiss swore in the new treasurer, Jeanne Pollard. BESSEMER—The normally scheduled Monday night Bessemer City Council meeting was moved to Thursday night this week. Gogebic County Sheriff Pete Matonich spoke to the council about approving his proposed 3-year police contract that included Wakefield. Bessemer and Wakefield have been sharing services with the sheriff’s department since 2007. ONTONAGON — The Ontonagon County board Tuesday said goodbye to long time treasurer Dee Killoran Tuesday. Killoran has worked for the county for 44 years and nine months, 32 of those years were as County Treasurer. Killoran is retiring at the end of the month. BESSEMER — A high-speed pursuit that allegedly topped speeds of 100 mph and went through both Wisconsin and Michigan ended with the arrest of Paul Edward Harley, 59, of Wakefield. HURLEY - The kindergartners through sixth graders in the Hurley Schools got a break from their normal class schedules on March 27 as the Iron County Health Department held its annual health fair in the school's gym. The return of warm weather to the Gogebic Range on Wednesday was accompanied by lightning, rain and wind damage. Trees were knocked down across Range roadways and the 300-foot transmitter tower that WUPM-106.9 FM radio uses on Anvil Hill in the Bessemer area was toppled by wind, according to the Gogebic County Sheriff's Department. Schools throughout Gogebic County will be safer in the upcoming months after they are equipped with special classroom door locks as part of a Upper Peninsula-wide grant from the Department of Homeland Security. IRONWOOD — The Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education approved a one-day unpaid suspension for school bus driver Jerry Hitter after the bus he was driving was involved in an accident in Negaunee while returning home from the regional basketball tournament in Marquette on March 16. WAKEFIELD - A faulty transformer at Xcel Energy's Ironwood substation led to the 26-hour power outage in parts of Wakefield on Jan. 23-24, according to city manager Margot Anderson. GALESBURG (AP) - More than 100 vehicles were involved in pileups on a snowy Michigan interstate on Friday, killing a trucker and igniting a fire and explosion on a semi carrying fireworks, police said.
