LANSING — State Rep. Greg Markkanen, R-Hancock, is advocating Houghton County acquire a closed prison facility in Painesdale and convert it into a regional jail for the Western Upper Peninsula. WATERSMEET - A washed out culvert has caused the U.S. Forest Service to close Forest Road 3340 at the intersection of Old U.S. 2 and intersection FR 3346 in Watersmeet. WAKEFIELD — Michigan State Police posts in the Upper Peninsula collected 338.2 pounds of prescription drugs during National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on Saturday. F/Lt. HURLEY — An Illinois man wanted in his home state attempted to escape from Iron County Sheriff’s Department custody Saturday while being treated for a medical issue. The man was booked into the Iron County Jail early Saturday morning on local charges of disorderly conduct and a warrant out of Illinois, according to Iron County Sheriff Paul Samardich.
