According to the Michigan Civilian Labor Force, unemployment in the county in May numbered 350. That is 50 fewer than the 400 unemployed in January. A closer look at the labor force statistics, however, show there are fewer people employed in Gogebic County in those five months. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development reported this week the unemployment rate in Iron County improved from 7.6 percent in April to 5.3 percent in May. A year ago it was 7.1 percent. The suit, filed June 15, is seeking “in excess of $1.2 million in damages” it says were the result of Olson-DeRosso’s alleged embezzlement while treasurer. ONTONAGON — The Ontonagon County Board of Commissioners will ask the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for emergency dredging of the Ontonagon Harbor. Scott Roehm told the board a lake freighter loaded with materials for road construction was unable to enter the harbor and unload because of a shoal 50 yards out in Lake Superior at the river’s mouth.
