HURLEY — A crowd of spectators gathered Sunday afternoon to watch the annual Iron County Mud Pit races put on by the Hurley Fire Department. The races took place in a large pit along the Iron Horse Trail just west of downtown. The event was part of the 31st annual Memorial Day Weekend ATV Rally. BESSEMER— The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners Wednesday set the 2016 county millage rate at .00668, the same as in 2015, but it will result in $44,100 more being collected in taxes. A total of $3,401,704 will be collected in taxes, up $44,100 from 2015, according to a report from Gogebic County Equalization Director Tom Novascone. BESSEMER — The Bessemer Area School Board adopted the 2016-’21 Gogebic-Ontonagan Intermediate School District’s common calendar Monday evening. BESSEMER — A Bessemer woman was sentenced to probation and community service in Gogebic County Circuit Court Thursday on the charge of third degree attempted home invasion. Evalyn Marie Juntti, 50, of Bessemer was sentenced to 18 months probation and 30 days in jail, although Judge Michael Pope said she wouldn’t serve additional jail time if she performed 32 hours of community service each month while on probation.
