IRONWOOD - A site plan and conditional use permit for Xcel Energy's move into Ironwood's industrial park were approved Thursday by the planning commission. Russ Kiviniemi, a professional engineer with Cedar Corporation, of Menomonie, Wis., outlined project plans for Xcel, with a half-dozen citizens attending the public hearing. HURLEY - The Iron County Development Zone Council invited local businesses and organizations to Sharon's Coffee Company on Thursday evening to go over an annual report. Started in 1989, coordinator Kelly Klein said the development zone has served to help the county create jobs and get more investments. MERCER-Hundreds of people took in the array of goods and crafts Wednesday during the 35th annual Loon Day art and craft show. Merchants and visitors flocked from all over the country, including New York, Illinois, and Texas as well as Michigan, Minnesota and all over Wisconsin. HURLEY — Kids learned about animals at the Hurley Public Library Wednesday. As part of its Nature’s Superheroes series, traveling naturalist Licia Johnson from the North Lakeland Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters, brought with her many critters. Before she showed the audience her friends, Johnson asked the children what their favorite superheroes were. Batman, Wolverine and Spiderman, were among the responses. IRONWOOD - Sounds of music filled Longyear Park as the Gogebic Range Concert Band performed on Tuesday evening. Sitting on lawn chairs and blankets, 30 people gathered at the park. People in attendance were encouraged to donate food items or money for the Iron County Food Bank. Before the concert started, people had donated 15 bags of food. HURLEY — A group of local leaders met with representatives from La Pointe Iron Co., last week in Hurley to discuss the possible reception a renewed development of the mine site near Upson Wis., — by a company other than Gogebic Taconite — would receive in Iron County. IRONWOOD - One step at a time, Don Stevenson, 79, has walked more than a thousand miles to raise funds and awareness for pulmonary hypertension. During a cross country hike, Stevenson passed through Wisconsin and onward to Ironwood along U.S. 2 Monday. Beginning on June 9 from Auburn, Washington, Stevenson walked more than 1,700 miles to get to Ironwood. WAKEFIELD - The Michigan State Police's Wakefield Post has some new faces as the post recently welcomed two new members, fresh from the state police academy's most recent graduating class. Troopers Andrew Tower and Kyle Swanson graduated on July 24 as two of the troopers comprising the state police's 128th Trooper Recruit School. BESSEMER – The Bessemer City Council approved the contract for engineering and coating inspection services on the Aquastore water storage tank located on Tilden Road at Monday's meeting. With the council's approval, Bessemer employs Dixon Engineering for $14, 414 to perform technical services on the 62,000 gallon standpipe tank. SAXON, Wis. - The 88th annual Iron County Fair had a successful weekend, seeing beautiful weather and lots of fair-goers. Saturday was the busiest day, hosting a number of events, Earl's Rides, competitions and of course the 4-H buildings. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, children and adults came to show appreciation for the library's hard work during the summer reading program. IRONWOOD — Gogebic Community College has been chosen as the recipient of the 2015-2020 TRIO-Student Support Services Grant in the amount of $247,580. “This is the fourth time GCC has received the grant, and one of a very limited number of programs to receive a perfect score on the grant application,” said Jessica Leinon-Novascone, Director of TRIO-SSS. SAXON, Wis. - Visitors to Saxon Harbor may have noticed a new sidewalk and several new docks this summer at the harbor's north basin. The improvements are part of the first phase of an effort by the Iron County Forestry Department to upgrade the harbor. Four docks were replaced on the south side of the north basin - the basin closest to Lake Superior - and a sidewalk was poured near the new docks, making the boats that use the renovated slips easier to access. IRON RIVER, Wis. — A logging truck driven by a Hurley man was involved in a 1:36 p.m. Thursday accident that is under investigation by the Iron River Police Department. Police said a 2003 Toyota Tundra was westbound on U.S. 2, near Iron River, driven by Sue Beard, of Wyoming, Ohio. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Area residents have continued to turn out for Aspirus Grand View's Healthy Step Challenge, held at the township's Airport Park each Tuesday since July 7. A soggy summer across the Gogebic Range has turned into days of sunshine. After several days of oppressive heat, lower temperatures, into the high 70s, are predicted through Sunday, with no rain. SAXON, Wis. - Saxon farmer Kenny Clement said Iron County Fair-goers will be treated to some new tractor-related events during this weekend's three-day celebration. Clement said an early 1900s vintage hay baler that is horse-drawn was found at the old DeRosso farm near the former Cary Mine in Hurley. IRONWOOD — The Ironwood City Commission took no action Monday on a request to fund construction of a viewing deck on Mt. Zion. The city’s parks and recreation committee had supported city funding for the deck, according to Community Development Director Michael Brown. WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield City Council discussed the latest update with the Gogebic Range Solid Waste Management Authority Monday night. A meeting was held with the authority Thursday, in which it reduced the rate for all customers from $120 to $108 per ton. The new rate will be for a two-month trial period beginning Saturday.
