Even though it took a bit longer than last year for the trails to open, the recent snowfall meant snowmobilers could travel the Gogebic Range, with a parade of vintage snowmobiles traveling from Ironwood to Hurley Friday night to watch fireworks and kick off the weekend's Snowmobile Olympus races in Ironwood. IRONWOOD — The city commission this week approved a “carve-out” agreement for the pension fund of Ironwood Housing employees. City treasurer Paul Linn said creating a separate division of the pension fund will allow city officials and the Ironwood Housing Commission board to get a “more accurate picture” of assets and liabilities of the housing employees. The November unemployment rate rose in all but one county, Gogebic, in the western Upper Peninsula. The Gogebic County rate fell just a tick, from 6.2 percent in October to 6.1 percent in November. According to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget, both the civilian labor force and total employment rose by 50 in November. Total unemployment remained at 400. BESSEMER - The sentencing of Martin Henry Brecke, 33, of Ironwood, has been rescheduled for Jan. 11 after Gogebic County Circuit Court Judge Roy Gotham approved a motion to adjourn Tuesday's sentencing hearing. Brecke pleaded guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter on Nov. 10. An additional felony count of delivery of heroin, resulting in death, was dismissed as part of the plea deal. IRON RIVER, Wis. — A 54-year-old Iron River man was killed when his vehicle collided with a semi tractor-trailer east of Iron River on Wednesday. Dean A.
