IRONWOOD — The 2015-’16 budget the Ironwood City Commission will consider Monday includes a small increase in city property taxes. According to the proposed budget resolution, property taxes of $1,777,000 are projected, compared to the $1,675,000 approved a year ago, or less than a 1 percent increase. The city’s fiscal year runs through June. The total general fund budget to be considered Monday by city commissioners is $3,168,000, up $41,000 from a year ago. IRON BELT, Wis. - The man who brought the color pink to his Iron Belt construction business, Angelo Luppino, died this week of cancer at 82. He was born and raised in Hurley, graduating from the Hurley High School in 1952. He married Nancy Nelson in 1953 and they had two children, a son, Paul, and a daughter, Karen. Luppino met his wife on a blind date and knew from the moment he met her that she was the one. "He met me and that was it," she said. They had a long and happy marriage of 62 years.... Full story
HURLEY — Despite completing their stated mission, the members of the Riverside Trail Committee agreed at the group’s meeting Wednesday not halt their momentum and continue working on projects related to the development of a regional trail system in the area. IRONWOOD - Ironwood's youngest students celebrated the end of the school year with a special reward during recess on Tuesday as they got to tie District Superintendent Tim Kolesar to the playground equipment with streamers as a reward for good behavior. IRONWOOD — Even though the the Ironwood Area School District won’t be offering a traditional summer school, several teachers will be volunteering to continue offering math and reading lessons for students to try and ensure that the students don’t backslide and lose knowledge over the summer. Students from Washington Elementary School in Bessemer and Hurley K-12 School got their hands dirty Monday and planted flowers in their respective downtowns. ONTONAGON – Ontonagon Village Manager Joe Erickson told the Village Council Monday that engineers for a new dollar store in Ontonagon have been on the proposed site for the store and he expects a request will be made next week for a building permit to start the new structure. The new Family Dollar will be erected on M-38 across from the Ontonagon Court House and next to the former Pamida store. IRONWOOD—A group met Saturday morning at the Michigan Welcome Center to help clean up the banks alongside the Montreal River. Led by the Forest Service Department, the group met first to discuss safety procedures, protective equipment and the areas that would be cleaned up, which consisted of five zones. Garbage and recycling collection was done just on public land alongside the river and not actually in the water. It shows Wakefield customers pay the lowest sewer-water bills on the Gogebic Range, while Ironwood Township is on the high end. IRONWOOD — As the school year ends, the Ironwood Area School District is preparing for another summer of free lunches. IRONWOOD — The Ironwood City Commission decided Tuesday to move ahead with an Aurora land platting project. City officials had budgeted $20,600 for platting residences in the Aurora neighborhood that are currently under the ownership of the Aurora Land Association, but the commission instead agreed to pay half the total costs, which could amount to $17,500.
