    Students from Washington Elementary School in Bessemer and Hurley K-12 School got their hands dirty Monday and planted flowers in their respective downtowns. Washington Elementary School teacher Gene Goss and his fifth-grade students moved his class outside to enjoy the sunny weather and beautify their city. "This is an excellent program here," Goss said.   • Ontonagon village manager expects dollar store permit request shortly

    ONTONAGON – Ontonagon Village Manager Joe Erickson told the Village Council Monday that engineers for a new dollar store in Ontonagon have been on the proposed site for the store and he expects a request will be made next week for a building permit to start the new structure. The new Family Dollar will be erected on M-38 across from the Ontonagon Court House and next to the former Pamida store.     IRONWOOD - The Ironwood K-6 students gathered at Longyear Field Monday for the school's annual day of outdoor activities, including a fun run fundraiser, sponsored by the school's parent-teacher organization.   • Group helps clean up Montreal River

    IRONWOOD—A group met Saturday morning at the Michigan Welcome Center to help clean up the banks alongside the Montreal River. Led by the Forest Service Department, the group met first to discuss safety procedures, protective equipment and the areas that would be cleaned up, which consisted of five zones. Garbage and recycling collection was done just on public land alongside the river and not actually in the water. It shows Wakefield customers pay the lowest sewer-water bills on the Gogebic Range, while Ironwood Township is on the high end.     IRONWOOD — The Ironwood City Commission decided Tuesday to move ahead with an Aurora land platting project. City officials had budgeted $20,600 for platting residences in the Aurora neighborhood that are currently under the ownership of the Aurora Land Association, but the commission instead agreed to pay half the total costs, which could amount to $17,500.     HURLEY — The Iron County Board of Supervisors approved a plan Tuesday to contract with Iron County Sheriff's Department deputy Darrell Petrusha to continue maintaining the county's radio equipment once he retires from the sheriff's department.     BERGLAND — Four of the six high schools in the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District have received bronze ratings from U.S. News and World Reports.
