  • Snowshoe Extravaganza raises money for Hurley 4th of July fireworks

    GILE, Wis. - Organizers of the Hurley 4th of July fireworks held their second annual fundraising Snowshoe Extravaganza Saturday afternoon on the Gile Flowage. A total of 144 race participants showed up to take on the powder in their snowshoes. This year the Fireworks Committee added a bonfire and music at the Gile Park, with cooperation of Montreal city officials and fire department members. The Hurley Fire Department also helped.     BESSEMER - Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort hosted the Midwest Cat Clowder all day Saturday. Vintage sno-cats and groomers were on display at the base of the hill. The owners of these machines were available to talk with people about their machines and about their group. Kirk Citurs of Scranton, Iowa, traveled nearly 500 miles for the event.     BESSEMER - Vintage snowcat enthusiasts will gather at Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort Saturday as part of "Clowder in the Powder," an opportunity to display their machines and meet with other fans of these unique over-the-snow vehicles.     After a horrid November produced numerous snowstorms, the Gogebic Range has settled into a relatively normal winter. In fact, January's snowfall of 21.6 inches in Ironwood was about half the long-term norm of 44.2 inches for the month. The average temperature for January was 18.5 degrees, below Ironwood's long-term average of 20.3. The National Weather Service station at the Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant off Cloverland Drive recorded 2.2 inches of snow for the 24-hour period to 7 a.m.... Full story

  • Faulty transformer led to power outage

    WAKEFIELD - A faulty transformer at Xcel Energy's Ironwood substation led to the 26-hour power outage in parts of Wakefield on Jan. 23-24, according to city manager Margot Anderson. She said Tuesday the transformer that went down has since been replaced by Xcel. Anderson explained why Wakefield was one of the last communities to be completely restored to power.     BESSEMER - As if summoned by the great skier himself, large and very much needed snowflakes fell Saturday afternoon on Big Powderhorn Mountain just in time for the fourth annual Gugli Challenge.     BRUCE CROSSING - Eight quilters were registered for Brambleberry's 10th Souper Bowl Sundae quilting retreat held at the Stannard Township hall on Sunday.
