HURLEY-The Hurley Education Foundation inducted five new members on Saturday at the 13th annual induction ceremony hosted by Hurley K-12 School District. As part of the foundation's Class of 2015, Patricia Calvi Brahmstedt, Dr. James Lombardo, Dr. Robert Francis Baima, Paul Zarzyski and David Rigoni joined the 46 other inductees in the Hurley Education Foundation. HURLEY-People young and old experienced life before the turn of the last century during Heritage Day on Friday presented by the Iron County Historical Society at the Iron County Historical Museum. Heritage Day kicked off three weeks of the Iron County Heritage Festival. At the museum on Friday, people were able to watch a blacksmith, a broom maker and a musician playing antique instruments. ONTONAGON - A project by the Ontonagon Township Board will acquaint residents of what it was like to live in the village during the "old days." Large pictures from the past were installed Saturday on the outside façade of the Memorial Building in Ontonagon. WAKEFIELD—The city of Wakefield is set to welcome race fans to the annual Outboard Nationals Monday through Saturday, Aug. 1. Considered by the chamber of commerce to be the “Super Bowl of boat racing,” the outboard nationals draws in competitors across the U.S. and Canada to determine who’s the best. BESSEMER - After making a major milestone by receiving a Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant, the Western Gateway Trail Authority met Thursday to proceed making plans a trail from Ironwood to Bessemer. Currently, the trail runs along the former Soo Railroad grade in Ironwood from a bridge over the Montreal River to Crestview Street off U.S. 2 near Country Club Road. BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners approved a Department of Natural Resources Trust Fund grant Wednesday. According to chairman Joe Bonevetz, the grant approval will allow the Western Gateway Trail Authority to continue. HURLEY - The Hurley City Hall's meeting room was converted into an amateur art space Wednesday as the Hurley Library held its second summer kids reading program with help from the North Lakeland Discovery Center in Manitowish Waters. The activity allowed participants to turn leaves into artwork - either as part of bandana or as a bookmark. HURLEY - The talent of the area's artists will be on display this weekend as the Range Art Association holds its 60th annual art show at the Iron County Memorial Building beginning Friday. The show will feature over 70 entries in a range of artistic mediums, said association Treasurer Gerry Traczyk. IRONWOOD - A semi-truck driver knocked down utility lines on Houk Street on Tuesday afternoon. According to an Xcel Energy employee on the scene, a semi truck driver traveling on the street was too tall and snagged the wires, causing two poles to break. Wires ended up on the ground. MERCER - Although no formal action was taken during the meeting, the Iron County Comprehensive Planning, Land and Zoning Committee discussed what types of electronic signs are allowed under the county's ordinances. IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education, on Monday, approved continuing a lease with the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District to allow the GOISD to use a number of empty classrooms in Luther L. Wright. According to district Superintendent Tim Kolesar, the lease price of $32,981 is the same rate that the district leased the space to the GOISD last year and is more than likely close to a standard rate that the GOISD most likely pays all districts to use their facilities.... ONTONAGON — Up to a thousand Ontonagon Area High School graduates and their families and friends are expected to celebrate the 2015 All School Reunion in Ontonagon this upcoming Friday and Saturday, July 24-25. IRONWOOD — Many of the 118 people who donated to Ironwood's new Art Park attended the Friday afternoon ribbon-cutting ceremonies on Aurora Street. Jen Tucker, a community assistance specialist with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, presented Ironwood Community Development Director Michael Brown with a plaque on the occasion. The city received a $10,000 grant through MEDC to develop the Art Park after more than $15,000 was pledged locally toward the effort. MANITOWISH WATERS - A group of Iron County kids spent the week exploring nature at the North Lakeland Discovery Center during the 15th annual Iron County 4-H summer camp. The camp ran from Tuesday to Friday, July 7-10, and was open to third through fifth graders, according to Neil Klemme, the youth development agent with the University of Wisconsin's Iron County Extension Office, who runs the camp. HURLEY — The Hurley City Council agreed to add one-chair beauty salons to its conditional use ordinance on Tuesday. Mayor Joe Pinardi said a woman on Maple Street plans on opening a one-chair salon in her house, but the ordinance didn’t cover it. Adding beauty salons to the list will allow her to receive a permit to operate the business.
