IRONWOOD - Students at Luther L. Wright School in Ironwood used their Christmas spirit to help out some furry friends on Friday. Students in Michelle Giackino, Michelle Trier, Tony Bunt and Rachel Boyd's second grade classes and Nicole Mesich's special education class donated numerous items to HOPE Animal Shelter. GILE, Wis. - Santa Claus made a visit to Burgers Bar & Grill Saturday afternoon to have lunch with some kids and their families. Escorted by the Montreal Fire Department's Fire Chief Cookie Laguna, Santa Claus made a grand entrance on a shiny, red fire truck for lunchtime. WAKEFIELD - It was a big day Thursday for Wakefield-Marenisco elementary school students. The students in grades pre-kindergarten through fourth entertained family and friends at an evening Christmas concert. IRONWOOD - Gogebic Community College's board approved the hiring of three new personnel at their meeting on Tuesday night. GCC almunus and Ironwood native, Adam Arthur, will fill the newly created position of Marketing Coordinator, effective Jan. 5. The Director of Student Outreach & Engagement, Cindy Franck, recently resigned her position. The spot will now be filled by Dayle Jackson, the current Director of Student Support Services at GCC. BESSEMER - First graders at Washington Elementary in Bessemer, along with some teachers, parents and grandparents built gingerbread houses on Monday afternoon. Chattering echoed in the cafeteria as those in attendance built and decorated cardboard structures and graham cracker houses. BESSEMER - The Bessemer School Board at its Monday meeting heard absenteeism is up recently due to illness. Teacher Sherry Nyquist was suppose to make a presentation to the board, but was out sick for the day. Many students were also out sick or went home sick from Washington Elementary on Monday, said head teacher Diana Hansen. BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Board couldn’t decide whether to support House or Senate transportation legislation on Wednesday, but commissioners agreed there somehow should be an increase in funding for roads. Gogebic County Road Commission Engineer-Director Darren Pionk told the board the effort to change transportation funding, including the way gas tax money is distributed, is in the “11th hour” because this is the last week state legislators will convene. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — The Ironwood Township Board of Trustees approved a 2015 proposed budget of $913,729 Dec. 8. The fund balance for 2015 is $398,371, down nearly $100,000 from 2014. The millage rate will remain at 4.2714 after residents approved a road millage during the November mid-term election. A millage rate is the amount of tax per $1,000 of property value, the road millage replaced an expiring fire truck millage. The millage is for 1 mill and will last from 2014 to 2018. ONTONAGON - An attendance record was broken at the Ontonagon Theater of the Performing Arts Friday with the presentation of the "Christmas in the Snow." This year's bird survey from Wakefield to Iron County, Wis., is set for next Saturday, Dec. 20, according to organizer Jerry Edde, of Bessemer.
