  • Gogebic Community College hires three to fill positions

    IRONWOOD - Gogebic Community College's board approved the hiring of three new personnel at their meeting on Tuesday night. GCC almunus and Ironwood native, Adam Arthur, will fill the newly created position of Marketing Coordinator, effective Jan. 5. The Director of Student Outreach & Engagement, Cindy Franck, recently resigned her position. The spot will now be filled by Dayle Jackson, the current Director of Student Support Services at GCC.   • Bessemer students enjoy gingerbread

    BESSEMER - First graders at Washington Elementary in Bessemer, along with some teachers, parents and grandparents built gingerbread houses on Monday afternoon. Chattering echoed in the cafeteria as those in attendance built and decorated cardboard structures and graham cracker houses. Frosting, pretzels, marshmallow gingerbread men, gumdrops, cereal and much more were used for decorations and snacks.   • Absenteeism up at Bessemer due to illness

    BESSEMER - The Bessemer School Board at its Monday meeting heard absenteeism is up recently due to illness. Teacher Sherry Nyquist was suppose to make a presentation to the board, but was out sick for the day. Many students were also out sick or went home sick from Washington Elementary on Monday, said head teacher Diana Hansen.     BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Board couldn’t decide whether to support House or Senate transportation legislation on Wednesday, but commissioners agreed there somehow should be an increase in funding for roads. Gogebic County Road Commission Engineer-Director Darren Pionk told the board the effort to change transportation funding, including the way gas tax money is distributed, is in the “11th hour” because this is the last week state legislators will convene.     IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — The Ironwood Township Board of Trustees approved a 2015 proposed budget of $913,729 Dec. 8. The fund balance for 2015 is $398,371, down nearly $100,000 from 2014. The millage rate will remain at 4.2714 after residents approved a road millage during the November mid-term election. A millage rate is the amount of tax per $1,000 of property value, the road millage replaced an expiring fire truck millage. The millage is for 1 mill and will last from 2014 to 2018. This year's bird survey from Wakefield to Iron County, Wis., is set for next Saturday, Dec. 20, according to organizer Jerry Edde, of Bessemer.     HURLEY - The Iron County Finance Committee Thursday approved moving forward with aerial imaging of the county in 2015. Zoning administrator Tom Bergman discussed imaging, saying it is part of a consortium effort in northern Wisconsin. The plan is a for a plane to fly over using orthophotography, which uses lasers to measure the exact contours of the surface below.     BESSEMER - The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on a 5-1 vote approved a letter of "strong" support Wednesday for plans to develop a convention center-casino at Indianhead Mountain in Wakefield. The action came after a motion from commissioner George Peterson, of Watersmeet.
