Ontonagon and Baraga counties were the only two western Upper Peninsula counties to see unemployment rates improve in July, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget. In Ontonagon County, the jobless rate fell from 13.1 percent in June to 12.6 percent in July. A year agoit was 14 percent. The labor force took a jump of 125 to 2,550 in July and 100 more people were employed in Ontonagon County. Total unemployment stayed the same at 325. MENOMINEE — Marty’s Goldenaires Senior Drum and Bugle Corps won first place at a friendly competition with four other corps at a festival in Menominee. Marty’s Goldenaires marched and performed in the Waterfront Festival on Aug. 10 and won first place through a decision made by those in attendance. HURLEY - Daniel Hitchcock, of Hurley, is recovering well after going through surgery on his left lung as a result of pneumonia last week. Hitchcock, a 3-4 specialist, has been serving in Afghanistan with the 829th Engineering Battalion of the U.S. Army as a National Guard Reservist since June. He recently became ill with pneumonia and his left lung filled with fluid and the lining of the lung became infected. Jay Nixon on Thursday ordered the Missouri National Guard to begin withdrawing from Ferguson, where nightly scenes of unrest have erupted since a white police officer fatally shot an unarmed black 18-year-old nearly two weeks ago. HURLEY - Dozens of people attended a drive-in theater style fundraising event at the Hurley K-12 School Wednesday evening held by the 2015 Last Blast Committee. IRONWOOD - A new game, the "commodity carnival", was available at the Gogebic County Fair this past weekend. The activity is designed to walk fairgoers through the steps of bringing steer and cattle to market. "It's a great way to introduce kids to how they get food on the table," Gogebic County 4-H coordinator Anne Newcombe said. ROCKLAND - The Society for Old Victoria held its 32nd annual craft fair and museum tour at Old Victoria Sunday. "It's our annual fundraiser," tour guide Lynette Webber said.
