IRONWOOD - Preparations are underway for the fourth annual HIT Idol competition at the Historic Ironwood Theatre. Auditions are scheduled for Oct. 3-4 at the Historic Ironwood Theatre, and all young vocalists from throughout the Gogebic Range and northern Wisconsin are invited to audition. WAKEFIELD - More than 100 people participated in a walking event at Sunday Lake in Wakefield, with proceeds benefitting Rainbow Connection, an organization helping children and their families who face life-threatening diseases. According to organizer Diane Youngberg, Rainbow Connection is similar to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, but is not as well known. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Clear blue skies and temperatures in the 60s were the setting for the fly-in "Airport Day" held at the Gogebic-Iron County Airport in Ironwood Township on Saturday. Airport manager Mike Harma said the event is held with hopes of attracting more individuals to the world of flying. HURLEY - Suicide is something that has touched the lives of nearly every person. They know someone who has lost a loved one to suicide, or have had someone they love take their own life. It's a subject not often talked about, especially in men. In Wisconsin, men are four times more likely to die by suicide than women, and the suicide rate is highest in people ages 45-54. IRONWOOD - The city of Ironwood has received only one bid to demolish the former Kenny's Studio building at 227 E. Aurora St., next to the Carnegie Library. The city commission will meet Monday at 5:30 p.m. in regular session and will consider the bid from Jake's Excavating, of Ironwood, for $75,000. GILE, Wis. - At 31 years old, Danny Baross, who was married with three children and an employee at the Ojibway Correctional Facility, committed suicide in 2009. There were 742 suicide deaths in Wisconsin, in 2008, the most recent data available on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services' website. In 2012, Michigan had a total of 1,255 suicide deaths, which was up from 1,095 in 2002, according to the state's Department of Community Health website. Raising awareness is part of the motivation... Joan Rivers, the raucous, acid-tongued comedian who crashed the male-dominated realm of late-night talk shows and turned Hollywood red carpets into danger zones for badly dressed celebrities, died Thursday. BESSEMER - About 20 people attended the annual picnic of the Gogebic Range Woodcarvers club Wednesday afternoon under the pavilion at Bluff Valley Park in Bessemer. Labor Day weekend of 2014 will be remembered as one of wetness and lightning across the Gogebic Range. A Sunday night lightning storm that extended into Monday morning caused area streams to rise and some gravel roads to wash out, capping off a wild week of weather.
