HURLEY - It was Laskiainen on Sunday, the Finnish mid-winter sliding festival at Little Finland. A custom in Finland, the sliding festival typically starts seven weeks before Lent and is filled with winter activities and food. The celebration at Little Finland on Sunday was a few hours of socializing and delicious food. EWEN - The Ewen-Trout Creek School music program has enlisted the vocal band, The Cat's Pajamas, to perform at the Ontonagon Theater to raise money for the program. Music director Brad Besonen said fellow teacher Patti Witt told him the group had posted on Facebook about helping high schools. "(Witt) brought to my attention that The Cat's Pajamas had posted an ad on Facebook asking for schools in the Midwest to contact them to bring them in to have a concert in the local areas," Besonen said.... EWEN - The home of John and Mary Nordine on Cedar Street in Ewen was destroyed in a fire in the early morning hours Thursday. The couple and their three children were able to evacuate the home safely. McMillan Township Supervisor Dan Staff said it was unsure what caused the fire. "All we know is that when (the fire department) got there, half the house was already up in flames," he said. IRONWOOD - The elementary school gymnasium at Luther L. Wright was jumping Thursday as students participated in the annual "Jump for a Heart" event. The gymnasium was divided into 10 station, nine of which were based on different form of jumping exercises, such as skipping rope, plyometrics, a "long jump" and a "Lambeau Leap," as well as a number of other jumping activities. SAXON, Wis. - The Iron County Sheriff's Department was investigating a Wednesday morning fire that destroyed the former Jack Steinmetz residence on Carlson Road in Saxon. A deputy said the fire was fully engulfed when the Saxon Fire Department responded around 8:30 a.m. in minus-11 degree temperatures. Wolverine Ski Trail will be taken over by snowshoers Saturday for the annual YooperBeiner Race/Tour. The day will feature 5k and 10k races beginning at 11 a.m., followed by a kid's race, as well noncompetitive 5k and 2.5k tours. IRONWOOD - All household belongings and four pets were lost in a 7:54 p.m. Sunday fire that lit up the neighborhood at 206 Southwest St. A wood stove located in the basement caught on fire, the homeowner, Tracy Sedin, told Ironwood Public Safety Department Director Andrew DiGiorgio. BESSEMER - Gogebic County Sheriff Peter Matonich was first on the agenda for Bessemer's city council meeting on Monday night. Matonich said the sheriff's department has been adding some new services or is currently in the process of doing so. ERWIN TOWNSHIP - Descendants of the original Van Buskirk school children gathered on a chilly, but sunny Sunday to recreate an old photo and share some laughs. The original photo was taken on Feb. 17, 1915, by Matti Siirila and is titled "On the Rocks." WAKEFIELD - Sharp winds and below-zero temperatures didn't deter the crowds at the sixth annual Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department Ice Fishing Contest. 562 people registered for the event, which while down from last year's attendance of 700 to 800 people, was quite good considering the weather. Firefighters battle second-story flames at 206 Southwest St. in Ironwood on Sunday night. Neighbors said the fire started in the wood stove in the basement of the home. IRONWOOD - After 50 years of being a member of the National Ski Patrol, Roger "Pat" Bennetts has decided this would be his final season actively patrolling the area's ski hills. IRONWOOD - The Ironwood City Commission honored Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officer Grant Emery, of Bessemer, Monday for his role in thinning the deer herd in the city.
