WAKEFIELD - A faulty transformer at Xcel Energy's Ironwood substation led to the 26-hour power outage in parts of Wakefield on Jan. 23-24, according to city manager Margot Anderson. She said Tuesday the transformer that went down has since been replaced by Xcel. Anderson explained why Wakefield was one of the last communities to be completely restored to power. BESSEMER - In a short meeting on Monday night, the city council heard of a downtown business closure. La Panetteria, a bakery on Sophie Street, plans to close the doors on Friday at 4 p.m. Bessemer Chamber of Commerce President, Kathy Whitburn, was saddened when she heard the news early Monday. BESSEMER - As if summoned by the great skier himself, large and very much needed snowflakes fell Saturday afternoon on Big Powderhorn Mountain just in time for the fourth annual Gugli Challenge. Seventeen local skiers took to the hill in the National Standard Race (NASTAR)-style event to vie for one of three trophies and pay homage to the late Dominic "Gugli" Guglielmotto, who won more than 700 medals in the sport. BRUCE CROSSING - Eight quilters were registered for Brambleberry's 10th Souper Bowl Sundae quilting retreat held at the Stannard Township hall on Sunday. BESSEMER - Students from local schools took part in a cardio-pulmonary resuscitation training course in the A.D. Johnston High School library in Bessemer on Friday. IRONWOOD - Many Upper Peninsula residents aren't hunting anymore because they fear their dogs will be killed by wolves, state Sen. Tom Casperson, R-Escanaba, said Wednesday. VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) - Judge Jim Osborne is at it again, adding another exhibit to his collection of military history. The founder of the Indiana Military Museum and several volunteers on Sunday welcomed the facility's latest exhibit, an F-16 fighter jet. HURLEY - The Iron County Board of Supervisors learned on Tuesday that mining company Gogebic Taconite was unable to make its lease payment for county property for its proposed mine site near Upson. County chairman Joe Pinardi told the board he learned the news after an Iron County Mining Impact Committee meeting last week. BESSEMER - Science teacher Dave Rowe gave a presentation about the school's Quiz Bowl and Science Olympiad teams to the school board on Monday night. Two tournaments are held for the Quiz Bowl team. HURLEY - A 30-year-old Juneau, Wis., man received an eight-year prison sentence Monday in Iron County Court for sexually assaulting a young child on several occasions. Brett Myhre was sentenced by Judge Patrick Madden, who also ordered eight years of extended supervision after completion of the prison sentence. SAXON, Wis. - Nearly 200 people dined on roast beef and all the fixings during a benefit dinner and gun raffle for the Saxon-Gurney Fire Department on Sunday afternoon. According to department members, 189 meals were served during the annual dinner, filling the Saxon Community Center. WAKEFIELD — Residents in the city of Wakefield had their power restored on Saturday evening after power outages started early Friday night. The outages began momentarily on Friday afternoon, around 3:30 p.m. But by 5 p.m., power was out entirely in many locations across Gogebic County. On Friday evening, Xcel Energy’s power outage map on its website showed reported outages stretching from Ironwood to Lake Gogebic. HURLEY - A Winter Formal was held at the Iron County Memorial Building on Saturday night for area high schoolers.
