IRONWOOD — For the 18th time, area runners will run in the memory of John Jarvi Jr. as the Ironwood cross country team hosts its annual fundraiser in downtown Ironwood on Saturday. HURLEY - The Hurley riverfront is getting more colorful as members of the Hurley High School art program, taught by Terry Davis, have started a mural on the base of the former railroad bridge that allows all-terrain vehicles to cross the Montreal River into Ironwood. BERGLAND — Four of the six high schools in the Gogebic-Ontonagon Intermediate School District have received bronze ratings from U.S. News and World Reports. Ironwood, Besssmer, Watersmeet and Ontonagon high schools received the awards for mathematics and reading in a national ranking with schools across the nation. IRONWOOD — The Gogebic Range Solid Waste Management Authority Board approved hiring a specialized accountant at the board’s May 12 meeting, to provide the board with insight into the financial implications of Bessemer’s decision to leave the authority. LITTLE GIRLS POINT - The annual spring retreat for area wide sixth graders was held at Camp Superior this past weekend. Typically held in the middle of the week, this year the camp was held on the weekend for the first time for students from Wakefield-Marenisco, Bessemer and Ironwood, as well as many homeschool kids. MERCER, Wis. - Claire d'Loon, Mercer's 16-foot, 2,000-pound loon, located on U.S. 51, celebrated her 34th birthday, complete with a present - a new voice - Saturday. HURLEY - Northwoods Manufacturing held its second annual open house all day on Friday at the Hurley K-12 School. A steady stream of visitors flooded the shop throughout the day, talking with the students and watching demonstrations. BESSEMER — A resolution in support of the state of Michigan controlling the wolf population in the Upper Peninsula was approved by the Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday. Denny Ellos, secretary of the Western U.P. After a raucous start to winter 2014-’15, April in Ironwood bowed out rather mildly. In fact, the average temperature of 39.8 degrees was just above the 110-year average of 39.3 and the 13 inches of snow was just 1.6 inches more than normal. April precipitation of 2.43 inches was .21 inch below average, according to monthly statistics released by Kevin Crupi of the National Weather Service office in Marquette. IRONWOOD - The Gogebic County Road Commission said Lake Road, in Ironwood Township, was closed to traffic at Maki Creek beginning at 7 a.m. today. The road closure near Little Girl's Point is located about two miles east of the Wisconsin border. The purpose of the closure is to complete road construction work on the Maki Creek box culvert. BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners agreed Wednesday to increase a special 9-1-1 monthly surcharge by 30 cents per telephone or mobile device. The present charge is $1 per phone or device, but county voters authorized charging up to $1.65 in the November election. Gogebic County Emergency Management Coordinator Jim Loeper, who proposed the increase at the last county board meeting, offered a long list of reasons the increase is needed .
