ERWIN TOWNSHIP - Descendants of the original Van Buskirk school children gathered on a chilly, but sunny Sunday to recreate an old photo and share some laughs. The original photo was taken on Feb. 17, 1915, by Matti Siirila and is titled "On the Rocks." WAKEFIELD - Sharp winds and below-zero temperatures didn't deter the crowds at the sixth annual Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department Ice Fishing Contest. 562 people registered for the event, which while down from last year's attendance of 700 to 800 people, was quite good considering the weather. Firefighters battle second-story flames at 206 Southwest St. in Ironwood on Sunday night. Neighbors said the fire started in the wood stove in the basement of the home. IRONWOOD - Gogebic Community College President James Lorenson was recently named to the Michigan Community College Association Legislative Committee to a two-year position. IRONWOOD - After 50 years of being a member of the National Ski Patrol, Roger "Pat" Bennetts has decided this would be his final season actively patrolling the area's ski hills. WAKEFIELD - The ice of Sunday Lake will hopefully fill with fishermen Saturday for the sixth annual Wakefield Volunteer Fire Department fishing contest, weather permitting. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP -- The township board of trustees approved a four year plan to improve several of the most deteriorated roads in the township at Monday's meeting. IRONWOOD - The Ironwood City Commission honored Department of Natural Resources law enforcement officer Grant Emery, of Bessemer, Monday for his role in thinning the deer herd in the city. Ironwood has conducted bow hunts in the city for the past nine years and Emery has been instrumental in the "implementation and development" of the city bow hunt, noted city clerk Karen Gullan. GILE, Wis. - Organizers of the Hurley 4th of July fireworks held their second annual fundraising Snowshoe Extravaganza Saturday afternoon on the Gile Flowage. A total of 144 race participants showed up to take on the powder in their snowshoes. BESSEMER - Big Powderhorn Mountain Resort hosted the Midwest Cat Clowder all day Saturday. Vintage sno-cats and groomers were on display at the base of the hill. The owners of these machines were available to talk with people about their machines and about their group. Kirk Citurs of Scranton, Iowa, traveled nearly 500 miles for the event. The Gogebic County 4-H Market Livestock Group is within $50,000 of hitting the million-dollar mark through its annual livestock auction during the Gogebic County Fair in August. After a horrid November produced numerous snowstorms, the Gogebic Range has settled into a relatively normal winter. In fact, January's snowfall of 21.6 inches in Ironwood was about half the long-term norm of 44.2 inches for the month. The average temperature for January was 18.5 degrees, below Ironwood's long-term average of 20.3.
