After experiencing the coldest year on record in 2014, Ironwood residents are now in line for the second most frigid 12-month period since 1901. That's the word from Kevin Crupi, of the National Weather Service office in Marquette. PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Brittany Maynard will not live to see if her advocacy makes a difference. The 29-year-old woman expects to die no later than Nov. 1. IRONWOOD - Gogebic Community College has announced the initial accreditation status for its medical assistant certificate program by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). MADISON, Wis. (AP) - The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources on Tuesday said biologists have confirmed two cougar sightings in northern Wisconsin in recent months - the first confirmed so far in 2014. The cougars were photographed with trail cameras on private land in Lincoln and Marinette counties. They follow a string of such observations since 2008. WAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP - Due to a decrease in taxable property value Wakefield Township residents will get a slight tax break for 2014's tax year. The Wakefield Township Board approved a new millage rate at its meeting Tuesday, which is slightly lower than 2013's rate and will generate roughly $27,000 less in township revenue. IRONWOOD - Two members of the Daily Globe staff won awards in the Michigan Press Association's 2014 Better Newspaper Contest. BESSEMER - Bessemer's City Council voiced its support for the proposed hotel resort and casino on top of Indianhead Mountain in Wakefield Township, citing potential job creation associated with the endeavor. ONTONAGON COUNTY - Senior citizens recently enjoyed the fall colors in Ontonagon County from the seat of an off-road vehicle during the seventh annual Senior Fall Color Tour. BESSEMER - The city of Bessemer is looking to remove a blighted structure at 506 S. Moore St., for which it would receive grant reimbursements from the Michigan State Housing and Development Authority. SAXON, Wis. - More than 50 people spent Saturday night participating in a live auction as part of a the annual Fall Harvest Fundraiser for the Saxon-Gurney Community Presbyterian Church. IRONWOOD - Aspirus Grand View Hospital held an open house Thursday to show the public its new emergency department. Officials said the project, which included relocating the hospital's lab and pharmacy, cost $4 million and completely changed the appearance and structure of the hospital's emergency care location. HAZELHURST, Wis. - Family vacations for the Joe and Molly Bodewes family of Hazelhurst, Wis., are never boring. In 2011, the family paddled 1,600 miles around Lake Superior in 72 days, finishing at Black River Harbor, north of Ironwood. They raised money for HIV-positive children in Tanzania. BALSAM LAKE, Wis. - Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources wardens helped rescue two bear cubs stuck in a big tree in northern Wisconsin on Sunday. Joanne Haas, of the DNR, said the cubs were rescued from a Polk County tree. A woman reported hearing strange animal noises coming from the tree, and she saw a snout sticking out of a crack in the trunk on Saturday. HURLEY - Around 20 volunteers from different local organizations and agencies braved cold, rainy weather to help plant trees across the city of Hurley on Tuesday. The planting is part of a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Urban Forestry Start-Up Grant. Hurley received 17 trees of different varieties, including white and red oak and ironwood. After the most brutal winter in the past 110 years in Ironwood, Gogebic Range residents wouldn't mind a reprieve from the bitter cold for the next five months.
