HURLEY - A Wednesday fire destroyed an unattached garage and damaged the vinyl on the side of a house at 104 Germania St. in Hurley. Hurley Fire Chief Darrell Petrusha said the garage was fully engulfed when firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 11:35 a.m. He said no one was at home at the house, owned by Lois Chatterson, but there was a dog inside and it was saved. HURLEY - Hurley football fans were surprised during a game Friday against Lake Linden-Hubbell. It wasn't the score that sent them cheering, but a check presentation to the Hurley Education Foundation from Midland Services, of Hurley. For the past six years, the foundation has participated in the patronage program called "Cash for Kids." On a hot, muggy Tuesday afternoon, Eagle Bluff Golf Club groundskeeper Jeff Tenlen was aerating the greens, a process in which dime-sized holes are poked into the surfaces. WAKEFIELD - Parents of young children had the chance Tuesday to have their children's car seats thoroughly examined by members of local law enforcement and other certified child passenger safety inspectors. WAKEFIELD - More than 100 people participated in a walking event at Sunday Lake in Wakefield, with proceeds benefitting Rainbow Connection, an organization helping children and their families who face life-threatening diseases. IRONWOOD - The city of Ironwood has received only one bid to demolish the former Kenny's Studio building at 227 E. Aurora St., next to the Carnegie Library. GILE, Wis. - At 31 years old, Danny Baross, who was married with three children and an employee at the Ojibway Correctional Facility, committed suicide in 2009. There were 742 suicide deaths in Wisconsin, in 2008, the most recent data available on the Wisconsin Department of Health Services' website.
