ONTONAGON — The Ontonagon Village Council Monday heard a report from Manager Joe Erickson reviewing the operations of the Ontonagon Village Housing Commission. The housing commission governs the operation of Cane Court housing units for low income residents. Cane Court is owned by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, with by-laws set by both HUD and the commission. IRONWOOD - Elementary-aged students in the Ironwood Area Schools will soon have more options for lunch after the district received two new salad bars Friday. BESSEMER - This year, Bessemer's high school Science Olympiad team, with 36 total players including alternates, won first place in the Upper Peninsula regional competition at Northern Michigan University in Marquette in February. The junior high team took second place. Both are moving on to the 2015 State Tournament on May 2 at Michigan State University in East Lansing. ERWIN TOWNSHIP - Roughly 120 children participated in the Lapset Loppet, the final event of the 2015 Sisu Ski Fest, at the ABR Ski Trails on Tuesday. BESSEMER - The Bessemer City Council heard from Bessemer Chamber of Commerce president Kathy Whitburn about the chamber's plans for the year. IRONWOOD - It was the Bowl For Kids fundraising event Saturday at Larry's Lucky Strikes for the U.P. Kids Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Mentors and kids from the program as well as community members raised funds for the program in order to bowl for the cause. Each bowler only had to raise $37 for the event, but many raised even more. KIMBALL, Wis. — It was turkey with all the fixings all Sunday afternoon at the Kimball Volunteer Fire Department’s 33rd annual Turkey Dinner fundraiser. Fire Chief John Smith called the turn out “very good” with a mid-afternoon rush that pushed the number of diners to more than 800 by 3 p.m. More were expected before closing at 5. KIMBALL, Wis. - Area law enforcement officers and the Hurley Fire Department responded to the scene of a 10 p.m. Friday personal injury accident on U.S. 2, near the Corkscrew liquor store, east of County D. BESSEMER — The Gogebic County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday agreed to call for bids on a new roof on the annex to the courthouse. The building and grounds committee recommended seeking bids. The bid opening will be on March 23, according to Tom Laabs, of Ironwood, chair of the committee. Laabs said it could be around a $100,000 project, with funding possibly to come from the delinquent tax fund.
