IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Carnegie Library hosted a day of zombie-related events, including zombie make-up face-painting, on Tuesday afternoon. Ironwood resident Tyler Strand used liquid latex, powders and other make-up to provide willing participants with an opportunity to look like zombies. Strand has been interested in zombies and other things of the horror genre since he was a kid. INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - An Indiana teenager who was attempting to set a record for an around-the-world flight was killed when his plane crashed in the Pacific Ocean, and crews were searching Wednesday for his father, who was also on board. Family spokeswoman Annie Hayat said the plane flown by 17-year-old Haris Suleman went down shortly after leaving Pago Pago in American Samoa Tuesday night. HURLEY - The Iron County Mining Impact Committee discussed possible reclamation efforts at its meeting on Wednesday that would follow the mine being proposed by Gogebic Taconite near Upson, Wis. IRONWOOD - The Friends of the Miners Memorial Heritage Park announced the winners of the Art in the Park competition Saturday evening at Festival Ironwood. The outdoor exhibit includes 12 art installations along the one-mile Aurora Loop of the Miners Trail. The competition was judged by the public who walked the trail since the exhibit opened June 26. HURLEY - Hurley School District teacher Dan Rye on Monday showed school board members how seventh and eighth grade students will better be prepared for high school technology classes. Rye said two new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics classes will be offered at the school. Warrior Weekend is always the last full weekend in July and although it started small, it has snowballed since the last all-school reunion. IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Area Schools Board of Education heard the city and IAS were awarded the Safe Routes to School Grant of $386,614 at its meeting Monday evening. The grant is intended to cover renovation costs regarding school routes, i.e. sidewalks and administrative costs. IRONWOOD - The Ironwood Area Chamber of Commerce drew tourists from the Midwest for a 50th birthday celebration for the Hiawatha Indian statue Saturday morning. BERGLAND - The Lake Gogebic Chapter of Walleyes for Tomorrow believes sinking 550 tons of boulders will be a big boost to fishing on the lake. KOFORIDUA, Ghana - Being in 4-H can take people a lot of places, but Neil Klemme never imagined it would take him to the heart of Africa.
