ONTONAGON - Dorothy Phillips' desire to go hunting during her two days off from teaching at the Ontonagon High School in 1984 probably saved her life. Phillips was helping out a friend, the late Gladys Chamberlain, who needed medical work at Marshfield but would be unable to drive for 24 hours after the tests. Phillips talked her into getting her checkup on Wednesday so they could go hunting on Thursday and Friday. Phillips found herself in Marshfield with nothing to do for 24 hours and decided... WATERSMEET — One of Watersmeet Township’s school colors, gold and blue, will play an important part on Oct. 6 in raising awareness of bullying. The Nimrods will drop the gold and wear blue as part of a worldwide “Blue Shirt Day” to raise awareness of bullying and cyberbullying. WAKEFIELD - Students at the Wakefield-Marenisco School District will be volunteering to help the city with a few different projects expected to start next week. DETROIT (AP) - A pedestrian bridge collapsed onto a Detroit freeway after a trash truck struck the overpass early Friday, leaving the truck driver dead and snarling rush hour traffic, officials said. Two other vehicles were struck by debris, but no one else was injured, Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw said at the scene. MERCER, Wis. - September has been a month to remember for the Mercer School District. On Sept. 16, the district received its state report cards, and finished well, not only at the local level, but across Wisconsin, as well, with an average score of 80.5 out of 100. MINOT, N.D. (AP) - A Minot man believes his behemoth pumpkin may be the biggest ever grown in North Dakota. Danny Gates estimated that the giant pumpkin dubbed "Grace" weighs more than 1,600 pounds and is still growing. Gates said it was pollinated June 13 in a greenhouse west of Minot. HURLEY - Reclamation, the 2015 budget and a project update from Gogebic Taconite were discussed by the Iron County Mining Impact Committee Wednesday. The Community Foundation of Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties announced grants have been awarded pursuant to the Community Foundation's two priorities: Business Development and Youth Development. One $500 grant was awarded to Dan Greenough, from Eclipse Technical Services LLC, and the other was awarded to Ironwood Fighting Yoopers Ice Hockey League managed by Scott Kellett. ONTONAGON - The Ontonagon Rotary Club Wednesday presented the Ontonagon Amateur Hockey Association a check for the "Skates for Kids" program at the recreation facility. Individuals with a knack for names have a chance to suggest an official name for Michigan's statewide biking/hiking trail that stretches 900 miles from Ironwood to Belle Isle Park in Detroit through a contest of the state's Department of Natural Resources. In fact, Kevin Crupi, of the National Weather Service office in Marquette, said the first eight months of 2014 were the second coldest on record in Ironwood, dating to 1901.
