Ontonagon and Baraga counties were the only two western Upper Peninsula counties to see unemployment rates improve in July, according to the Michigan Department of Technology, Management and Budget. In Ontonagon County, the jobless rate fell from 13.1 percent in June to 12.6 percent in July. A year agoit was 14 percent. HURLEY - Daniel Hitchcock, of Hurley, is recovering well after going through surgery on his left lung as a result of pneumonia last week. Hitchcock, a 3-4 specialist, has been serving in Afghanistan with the 829th Engineering Battalion of the U.S. Army as a National Guard Reservist since June. He recently became ill with pneumonia and his left lung filled with fluid and the lining of the lung became infected.
