  • Iron County Mining Impact Committee accepting reclamation ideas

    HURLEY - Reclamation, the 2015 budget and a project update from Gogebic Taconite were discussed by the Iron County Mining Impact Committee Wednesday. Committee chair Leslie Kolesar, of Saxon, said the goal is to have a reclamation plan in place by November to be included in the local agreement with G-Tac.     The Community Foundation of Gogebic and Ontonagon Counties announced grants have been awarded pursuant to the Community Foundation's two priorities: Business Development and Youth Development. One $500 grant was awarded to Dan Greenough, from Eclipse Technical Services LLC, and the other was awarded to Ironwood Fighting Yoopers Ice Hockey League managed by Scott Kellett.     ONTONAGON - The Ontonagon Rotary Club Wednesday presented the Ontonagon Amateur Hockey Association a check for the "Skates for Kids" program at the recreation facility. Jason Clinesmith, president of the hockey association, and Shannon Clinesmith, treasurer, accepted $800 as the proceeds of the Rotary log sale during the Ontonagon Labor Festival.     IRONWOOD - Cool and wet best describes August in Ironwood, adding to a year of below average temperatures. In fact, Kevin Crupi, of the National Weather Service office in Marquette, said the first eight months of 2014 were the second coldest on record in Ironwood, dating to 1901.     PLACERVILLE, Calif. (AP) - The man suspected of deliberately starting a fire that is now threatening thousands of homes in Northern California has pleaded not guilty to an arson charge. Because of the ample rainfall that has included around 5 inches already in September in Ironwood, the colors may stick around at least a week longer this autumn, according to Bill McNee, a forest health specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. (AP) - The sister of a man arrested in a fast-growing Northern California wildfire says she strongly doubts he's responsible for starting the blaze, which has driven 2,800 people from their homes.
