    Remember those predictions a few years back that the price of gas might reach $5 to $6 a gallon in the United States by 2015? Those predictions are proving to be hollow as a gallon was selling for $1.99 at many northern Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula locations on Friday.     IRONWOOD - Newborn Sara Esther Bilc surprised her parents by arriving one month early, on Jan. 4, instead of Feb. 4. On Thursday, her parents, Esther and Andrei Bilc, of Ironwood, were further surprised to learn their only daughter was the first baby born in the area in 2015. "That is very neat," Esther said.     IRONWOOD - A small, but spirited group of people showed up for the annual Sisu snowshoe event on Sunday morning. More than 30 participants raced in the 2K, 5K and 10K races.   • Township receives grant from Trans-Canada gas company

    IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - The Ironwood Township Volunteer Fire Department was recently awarded a grant to purchase automated external defibrillator (AED) units. The department received $3,500 from Trans-Canada, a natural gas company which operates a pipeline that runs through Ironwood Township.     IRONWOOD — The Sisu Ski Fest races today were shortened and set for later in the day because of the bitter cold. Sisu Ski Fest board president Ric Olson said Friday, “The race jury has decided that the 42-kilometer is delayed and shortened to 31K, with a 90-minute delay on all starts.” The 21K Heikki Lunta Half Marathon was shortened to 17K, with a 30-minute delay on all starts, Olson said.     HURLEY - The Iron County Board of Supervisors' finance committee met on Thursday morning to discuss hiring and snowmobiles in the sheriff's department, replacement of the current health officer and tax-deeded properties.     IRONWOOD - Wolverine Nordic Trail system recently added three new snowshoe trails to the already existing Hospital Loop.     Blowing snow, combined with wind chill readings of 40 below, closed Gogebic Range schools for the second time this week on Wednesday. Visibility was poor and traffic was light on Wednesday morning. Overnight winds of up to 30 mph were reported throughout the area.     IRONWOOD - The Aspirus Grand View Home Health team will soon begin offering home telemonitoring services to patients. Marcia Nelson, manager of AGVHH, said the new program is "a real opportunity for us to make a difference for the patients." The system has already set up at Aspirus Wausau and Aspirus Keweenaw, and Nelson said the programs at both locations seem to be working really well. From 2 to 7 inches of snow was possible, with the winds changing from the south to the north Tuesday night and into this morning, peaking at 20 to 30 mph, creating precipitation off Lake Superior.     Wind chill readings that dipped to minus 40 degrees and lower canceled school across the Gogebic Range Monday and wiped out Sunday's Ironwood Snowmobile Olympus races.
