    MERRIWEATHER - The Hoop 'N Holler Tavern held its 13th annual cardboard boat race on Lake Gogebic Sunday afternoon. The race consisted of five different age groups, including children up to age 5, ages 6-10, ages 11-16, ages 17-40 and seniors. One winner was crowned from each age group. First place prize was $25.     GURNEY, Wis. - The little town of Gurney, Wis., celebrated its 100th birthday on Saturday with a parade, games, food and other activities for all to enjoy at its community park.     BESSEMER — Bessemer Blast 2014 came to a close Friday night with a spectacular “Thunder on the Mountain” fireworks show that lasted about 40 minutes and attracted quite the crowd. Rick Snyder on Tuesday signed a law restoring a state tuition assistance program for active-duty Michigan National Guard members, making them eligible for reimbursement of up to $4,500 a year.     WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield-Marenisco School Board approved the 2014-15 budget at its meeting Monday evening. "The projected fund balance for June 30, 2015, is $72,237," said business manager Tina Trevarthen said. "We plan to end this year with a balance of $13,164."     IRONWOOD - Local residents got some exercise and viewed eco-friendly art pieces during the "Art in the Park" exhibition in Ironwood on Saturday.
