BESSMER - Residents of the Bessemer Area School district rejected a $4.98 million bond referendum to improve the district's two buildings on Tuesday by a slim margin of 62 votes. 33 percent of the 2,800 registered voters in the city and township came to the polls, which were held from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the Bessemer City and Township halls. IRONWOOD - Hundreds of families made their way to the Pat O'Donnell Civic Center Monday for the annual Range Shrine Club 3-Ring Circus. MERCER, Wis. - The Mercer Spanish Club celebrated Cinco de Mayo, hosting a fiesta for community members at the Mercer School on Monday. Cinco de Mayo, or fifth of May, is a holiday in Mexico, commemorating the Battle of Puebla in 1862 over the French. The holiday is popular throughout Mexico and in the United States. BAYFIELD, Wis. - Apostle Islands National Lakeshore staff members have been working on improvements to the Little Sand Bay Harbor. Around five years ago, floating finger piers were damaged by the ice. Since then, only two finger piers had been useable. Last year, National Park Service funding for needed work became available. WAKEFIELD - Members of the Michigan State Police Dive Team recovered three stolen firearms from Plymouth Mine Lake Sunday. The firearms were recovered, stemming from a joint investigation by the MSP Wakefield Post and the Gogebic County Sheriff's Department. BESSEMER — Voters in the Bessemer School District will head to the polls on Tuesday to vote on a proposed bond referendum. The $4.98-million, 19-year referendum would provide for updates to the district’s two school buildings. This is the second time the school has had a referendum on the ballot in recent months. HURLEY - Local residents will tie up their shoes for the ninth annual Brian Nasi Memorial Heart Run/Walk Saturday in Hurley. WAKEFIELD - After a month of collecting donations for its first ever food drive, the Michigan State Police Wakefield Post delivered more than 1,500 pounds to St. Vincent De Paul Food Pantry in Bessemer Thursday. BESSEMER - City officials officially ended the water let-run for Bessemer residents on Wednesday. The order has been in effect since January, with about 450 people told to keep their water running. The city provides water services for around 1,100 customers.
