ANN ARBOR (AP) - About 300 people participated in a 5K race Sunday in honor of a slain University of Michigan medical student. The Paul DeWolf Memorial Hero Run took place at Nichols Arboretum in Ann Arbor. DeWolf would have graduated this weekend. BESSEMER - Mark and Jane Bale have three children of their own, but have been foster parents to 45 kids over the years. The month of May was first declared Foster Care Awareness month in 1988, but the Bales got involved with the cause when they read an article in the newspaper more than 32 years ago. Every Tuesday night over the summer, people looking to get outside and get some exercise can hit the roads and pedal the trails with a group of fellow bikers for the Fat Tire Rides. IRONWOOD — Four Ironwood freshmen competed at the 25th annual Michigan Technological University Bioathlon recently in Houghton, and came home with a second place finish. Sixteen teams from across the Upper Peninsula competed in the event, including Bessemer, Houghton, L’Anse, Negaunee and Calumet. IRONWOOD - Friends of Miners Memorial Heritage Park will host their fifth annual spring clean-up on Saturday. The Miners Memorial Heritage Park is 167 acres of land owned by the city and has been the site of much illegal dumping of tires, appliances and furniture over the years. According to a release, there is still a problem with people continuing to dump trash in the compost area and park. HURLEY - The Aging Unit of Iron County Board of Directors appointed members to committees, installed a new member, and further discussed its bylaws during its meeting on Thursday. Following confusion over election rules at a previous meeting, the Board of Directors was unable to fill an empty position. PORT HURON (AP) - Sea lampreys look alien, and Jim Frazer had a close encounter of the worst kind with one on Saturday during the Port Huron Spring Fling salmon fishing tournament. "We had one, and I had it stuck to my bicep because my boat mate stuck it to me," Frazer, captain of the Double Down, told the Times Herald of Port Huron. "It was small, about 5 to 6 inches long." BESSEMER - Members of the Bessemer Downtown Development Authority heard an update about the Ethnic Commons project and agreed to partner with the city and fund one of three seasonal employees. City Manager Mike Uskiewicz said the city was going to hire two seasonal workers and asked the DDA if they would fund the third position, which would perform mowing, trash pickup and other duties specifically in the downtown area. BESSEMER — The Woman’s Club of Bessemer hosted the 2014 Senior Tea to honor Bessemer Area School’s graduating seniors, and award a scholarship to one student seeking to further their education at Gogebic Community College. BESSEMER — Members of the Bessemer City Planning Commission discussed how the city can make use of its land by creating new recreational trails and selling some for commercial development during its meeting on Wednesday. LONGUEIL, Quebec — Canadian exploration company Highland Copper Company announced Tuesday it had completed the interim closing of all the rights, title and interest of Copper Range Company, regarding the White Pine copper project.
