IRONWOOD - Local residents sat down for a community Christmas meal at Woodland Church in Ironwood Wednesday. This is the third year the event has taken place, and according to Pastor Mike Hill, the event gets more popular each year. I was still fiddling with the focus knob on the spotting scope when the duck flipped up and dove for the bottom of the pond. "Uh oh, that's no mallard," I thought, as I struggled to bring the edge between the open water and the snow-covered ice into sharp focus. Plenty of early season snow has made the area's ski hills, cross country trails and snowmobile trails perfect for a holiday getaway. WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield City Council raised sewer rates at its Monday evening meeting. The council agreed to increase the sewer rate from $2 to $3.50 per 1,000 gallons and also to decrease the administration cost for the sewer fund by $3,000. This will generate an additional $48,600 in revenue for the council, assuming each resident uses 3,000 gallons of water per month, said city manager John Siira in a memo to the council. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - The Christmas tree at the Steve and Rose Bratu home in Ironwood Township is special this year. It's as wide as it is tall. Steve and his son, Marcus, were hunting in Montana when they found the juniper that was suitable for the family tree. IRONWOOD - The Historic Ironwood Theatre is heading into 2014 with a fully redesigned website and a performance schedule with a wide variety of events. IRONWOOD — The Ironwood City Commission will consider a $150,000 Christmas gift at Monday’s meeting. Mark and Denise Stephens, of Bessemer, would like to donate common stock to the city with an approximate value of $150,000 to be used for an electric ice and edging machine for the Patrick O’Donnell Civic Center rink. IRONWOOD- 14 year Air Force Veteran, and longtime Ironwood resident Murray Morgan travelled to Arlington National Cemetery Saturday Dec. 14 along with 40 other truck drivers as a part of Wreaths Across America. Morgan served as an ambassador for Halvor Lines Trucking, Superior, his employer. IRONWOOD- Auditions for "Rumbo," by Cynthia Mercati began Wednesday evening at the Ironwood Theatre, a production of local high school aged teens. The slapstick comedy will be performed in February, Director Mary Hansen said. Rehearsals will be twice a week, on Mondays and Thursdays, until the performance.
