The satellite will be part of a NASA program that encourages research in engineering and technology. The space agency allows a handful of institutions each year to produce cube-shaped satellites, or CubeSats, that it launches into low orbits. It approved Marquette's proposal and 15 other projects this month. The Milwaukee schoo...
IRONWOOD - Storm Seneca packed a wallop on the Gogebic Range that was still being felt Friday evening, as blowing and drifting snow continued to make driving hazardous. The Gogebic Range was hit with from a foot to 15 inches of snow on Thursday night into Friday evening, closing schools and businesses. Strong winds continued into Friday night as the plows couldn't keep up with the drifting. The impact of the storm was every bit as severe as the National Weather Service had predicted. The...
KRASNAYA POLYANA, Russia - Resi Stiegler's string of crash-free runs ended Friday, a frustrating conclusion to the Sochi Olympics for an athlete who returned to the Games after multiple wreck-induced injuries. Stiegler, of Jackson Hole, Wyo., was 20th after the first of two runs at the Rosa Khotor course, but her second run ended in the second of three sections on the course. Stiegler had trimmed time from her first run, completing the first section almost 1 second faster than her first run....

The small church has a group of dedicated quilters who meet each Wednesday for fellowship, food and quilting. The group makes quilts together to donate to various local and worldwide organizations. "While the number of quilters varies week to week, their yearly production of 80 to 90 quilts is pretty steady - 88 units were shipped this year," parishioner Ken Raisanen...
BESSEMER — A.D. Johnston biology students have been enjoying an informal lecture series that started last fall. The series started when Roger Greil, an aquatic lab manager at Lake Superior State University, talked about lake sturgeon, and continued when Peter David, a wildlife biologist from the Great Lakes Indian Fish and Wildlife Commission, talked about wild rice. Greil, a Bessemer native, said the lake sturgeon is a “relic from the age of the dinosaurs that has appeared unchanged for the...

MONROE (AP) - A Michigan utility has welcomed a flock of visitors to the state's biggest power plant this winter. But they aren't all that personable. The south-flying out-of-towners - nearly 200 bald eagles - have taken up residence at DTE Energy's massive plant along Lake Erie, transforming 800 acres in Monroe into their cozy, cold-weather abode. The birds have been a common sight these past few frigid months, patiently perching on tree branches and using their 6- to 7-foot wingspans to smooth...
Numerous communities across the Upper Peninsula, including Ironwood, have issued water let-run notices to prevent homeowners' pipes from freezing. With frost already more than 7 feet deep across the U.P., homeowners are struggling with frozen water lines, especially where there is little snow cover. Many U.P. water customers are being asked to run their water at a pencil eraser width until further notice and keep the snow cover over the lines. Bob Richards, of the Ironwood department of public...
