HURLEY - The Aging Unit of Iron County Board of Directors appointed members to committees, installed a new member, and further discussed its bylaws during its meeting on Thursday. Following confusion over election rules at a previous meeting, the Board of Directors was unable to fill an empty position. PORT HURON (AP) - Sea lampreys look alien, and Jim Frazer had a close encounter of the worst kind with one on Saturday during the Port Huron Spring Fling salmon fishing tournament. "We had one, and I had it stuck to my bicep because my boat mate stuck it to me," Frazer, captain of the Double Down, told the Times Herald of Port Huron. "It was small, about 5 to 6 inches long." BESSEMER - Members of the Bessemer Downtown Development Authority heard an update about the Ethnic Commons project and agreed to partner with the city and fund one of three seasonal employees. City Manager Mike Uskiewicz said the city was going to hire two seasonal workers and asked the DDA if they would fund the third position, which would perform mowing, trash pickup and other duties specifically in the downtown area. BESSEMER — The Woman’s Club of Bessemer hosted the 2014 Senior Tea to honor Bessemer Area School’s graduating seniors, and award a scholarship to one student seeking to further their education at Gogebic Community College. BESSEMER — Members of the Bessemer City Planning Commission discussed how the city can make use of its land by creating new recreational trails and selling some for commercial development during its meeting on Wednesday. LONGUEIL, Quebec — Canadian exploration company Highland Copper Company announced Tuesday it had completed the interim closing of all the rights, title and interest of Copper Range Company, regarding the White Pine copper project. IRONWOOD - With a May 19 start date set for the beginning of a two-year U.S. 2 reconstruction project in Ironwood, the city commission approved the project's funding at its meeting Monday evening. Both years, or phases, of the U.S. 2 project, are part of a larger Phase III water and sewer project. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - The Ironwood Township Board of Trustees, Monday, discussed an alternative source of funding to help update its ailing roads. Four years ago, the township passed a four-year millage to help pay for a fire truck. The fire truck has since been paid for, allowing the board to drop the 1 mill from the taxes. WAKEFIELD - The Wakefield City Council scheduled a work session to discuss the proposed budget for the 2014-15 fiscal year during its meeting Monday. HURLEY - More than 200 people came to run, walk or stroll the ninth annual Brian Nasi Memorial Heart Run/Walk in Hurley on Saturday. The event was held at the Hurley K-12 School. Many red balloons were purchased in memory of others and were released in the sky prior to the starting of the race. There was also face painting and a clown. The Gogebic Range Trail Authority held a cleanup session Saturday afternoon along Trail 2, a snowmobile/ATV trail in western Gogebic County. Volunteers met in Bessemer early Saturday morning before gathering in Hurley to begin cleaning the trail back into Michigan.
