HURLEY - The Hurley Lions Club and Iron County youth joined forces to fundraise at the club's annual Pancake Day Sunday at the Liberty Bell Chalet in Hurley. Pancake Day, held on Palm Sunday for more than 35 years, serves as a fundraiser for both the Lions Club and the camp. Lions prepare the food and wash dishes while camp counselors and some campers act as hosts and servers, seating guests, bringing beverages and food and busing tables. ONTONAGON – The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park's ski hill closed this past weekend after receiving 255 inches of snow for the season. Just as the amount of snow that fell for the season was up from last year, so was business and excitement at the hill, according to supervisor of operations Scott Jackson. Four people were arrested in the Upper Peninsula this week on meth-related charges, according to the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team. On Tuesday, UPSET detectives arrested two Marquette residents after meth components and a “finished meth product” were located in Negaunee. Both suspects were incarcerated in the Marquette County Jail for possession of meth and conspiracy to manufacture meth. TRAVERSE CITY (AP) - A fungal disease that has killed millions of North American bats is spreading and now has been detected in half of the United States, officials said Thursday. IRONWOOD - Four local high school seniors and one organization were honored during the 2014 Children's Trust Fund banquet at Gogebic Community College Wednesday evening. ONTONAGON - Nearly 500 pounds was lost in the annual Aspirus Ontonagon Fitness Center Meltdown which concluded with an award ceremony Wednesday. Top awards were based on percentage of loss. ONTONAGON - Six years ago Ontonagon Township assistant librarian Laura Lahaie, read a book called "Fancy Nancy", and it gave Lahaie the idea to have a tea party for the kids. Each year, the number of boys, girls and parents grow at the event. Lahaie buys fancy tea cups from the St Vincent DePaul store, parents bring a few snacks and everyone wears fancy hats to the party. Students in Kristen Kolesar's class wrote fictional stories about pioneers traveling west and the challenges they faced along the way. Each student also offered a picture to go with the story.
