    Jul 2, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — Months after Superstorm Sandy swamped her little island, the Statue of Liberty will finally welcome visitors again on Independence Day. Sandy made landfall one day after the statue’s 126th birthday, flooding most of the 12 acres she stands upon with water that surged as high as 8 feet. Lady Liberty herself was spared, but the surrounding grounds on Liberty Island took a beating. Railings broke, docks and paving stones were torn up and buildings were flooded. The storm des... Full story

Speaking at a town hall meeting at Gogebic Community College, he said a special session of the legislature may be called on the Medicaid expansion bill. “We may go back this summer to vote on it,” he said. State Rep. In the past, he said Michigan politicians often didn't work together. The fact that has changed was evident Friday evening when State Sen. Tom Casperson, a Republican from Escanaba, and State Rep. Scott Dianda, a Democrat from Calumet, held a joint town hall meeting at the GCC Lindquist Center. A... Full story

WASHINGTON (AP) — In a historic day for gay rights, the Supreme Court gave the nation's legally married gay couples equal federal footing with all other married Americans on Wednesday and also cleared the way for same-sex marriages to resume in California. In deciding its first cases on the issue, the high court did not issue the sweeping declaration sought by gay rights advocates that would have allowed same-sex couples to marry anywhere in the country.
