HURLEY — Ricky Kelly of Hurley has spent a lot of the past 20 years helping people at the Paavo Nurmi Marathon. HURLEY — A vast majority of the people attending a hearing on mining in Hurley on Thursday morning spoke against allowing bulk sampling and the Gogebic Taconite mine in general. More than 70 people attended the morning session of a Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources public hearing on bulk sampling and a pre-application notice from G-Tac. IRONWOOD — Ironwood City Manager Scott Erickson will check out the cost of the city constructing a sidewalk on the south side of U.S. 2 in the 2014-15 highway reconstruction project. (AP) — A UPS cargo plane crashed into a field near the Birmingham airport Wednesday, killing two pilots and scattering wreckage over a wide rural area moments after witnesses heard the massive jet coming in at treetop level. IRONWOOD — Clyde and Sally Gasparick are closing their music service store, Gasparick Music, after 22 years in business in downtown Ironwood. It’s a second retirement for Clyde, who retired from teaching in 1996. Clyde moved to Ironwood from Bark River in 1966 to teach music in the Ironwood schools. The three municipalities involved in a $1,160,000 improvement project at Gogebic-Iron Wastewater Treatment Plant in Ironwood approved bonding for the work this week. The city of Ironwood and Ironwood Township approved bond documents on Monday and the city of Hurley approved the borrowing on Tuesday. ROCKLAND — Construction on the Victoria Dam in Ontonagon County is nearly 40 percent complete, according to officials, who are targeting a Nov. 15 finishing date. SAXON, Wis. — Arnold Kero, of Saxon, was 7 years old in September of 1944 when he arrived home from school to hear the worst news any kid could imagine.
