GILE, Wis. — Four years ago, Daniel “Danny” Baross lost his battle with depression and took his life, just two months shy of his 32nd birthday. His death was shock to his family and friends. The event is part of a series of lectures that have been taking place over the past three years through Aspirus. “We try to do these every quarter,” Dave Sim, marketing manager for AGV, said. “We try to find topics that are of interest to people, and come up with providers who have the time... Full story

  • Nation pauses on 9/11 to pay tribute to victims

    Sep 12, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — Life in lower Manhattan resembled any ordinary day on Wednesday as workers rushed to their jobs in the muggy heat, but time stood still at the World Trade Center site while families wept for loved ones who perished in the terror attacks 12 years ago. For the families, the memories of that day are still vivid, the pain still acute. Some who read the names of a beloved big brother or a cherished daughter could hardly speak through their tears. “Has it really been 12 years? Or 12... Full story

  • Review: Slick iOS 7 shines on Apple's new iPhones

    Sep 12, 2013

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — One of the best things about Apple’s latest iPhones is the slick new iOS 7 software that runs the devices. But that souped-up operating system could end up hurting sales because the free software upgrade will also work on iPhones released since 2010, giving owners of the older models less incentive to buy Apple’s newest products. Perhaps unwittingly, even Apple’s software boss Craig Federighi alluded to this potential problem while he was bragging about iOS 7 at the com... Full story

  • 9/11 ceremony will be a quiet 'last' for mayor

    Sep 11, 2013

NEW YORK (AP) — When this year’s Sept. 11 anniversary ceremony unfolds at ground zero, the mayor who has helped orchestrate the observances from their start will be watching for his last time in office. And saying nothing. Over his years as mayor and chairman of the National Sept. 11 Memorial & Museum, Michael Bloomberg has sometimes tangled with victims’ relatives, religious leaders and other elected officials over an event steeped in symbolism and emotion. But his administration has large... Full story

WAKEFIELD — The Wakefield City Council heard Monday from electric/water department working foreman John Granato that a final Xcel Energy bill has been assessed for $18,055. Xcel’s earlier figures were based on estimates, and they had nine months for their accountants to prepare the final amount based on actual costs. The city took over electrical services from Xcel nine months ago. The increased cost to the average customer is about 2 cents per kilowatt hour, said Granato, and the Xcel cos... Full story

    Sep 10, 2013

WASHINGTON (AP) — Battling stiff resistance in Congress, President Barack Obama conceded Monday night he might lose his fight for congressional support of a military strike against Syria, and declined to say what he would do if lawmakers reject his call to back retaliation for a chemical weapons attack last month. “I think it’s fair to say that I haven’t decided” on a next step if Congress turns its back, the president said in an NBC interview, one of six he granted during the day as part of a... Full story

  • Retroactivity issue stalls juvenile lifer bills

    Sep 9, 2013

LANSING (AP) — More than a year after the U.S. Supreme court struck down mandatory life-without-parole sentences for juveniles, Michigan lawmakers attempting to bring the state into compliance have hit a potential stalemate that threatens to derail any progress. The sticking point: Does the decision apply retroactively to the 360 or so inmates who were under 18 when they committed crimes, mostly murder? A group of Republican and Democratic legislators says prisoners should get new sentences, especially more than 100 who had lesser roles in a k... Full story

    Ralph Ansami|Sep 7, 2013

IRONWOOD — It will apparently cost $53,000 to clean up the blighted parcel the city of Ironwood condemned at 213 Bonnie St. The city commission on Monday will consider awarding a bid for that amount to Jake’s Excavating, a local company, for the removal of the structure and clean-up of the site. The former Peterson grocery store building in Bonnie Location was most recently owned by John Harteloo, who made no effort to clean up the site in the past few years, leading to the condemnation declaration because of health hazards.
