IRONWOOD — St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Ironwood is facing challenges because of some of the donations that are received. According to store manager Terri Cvengros, the store has been receiving a number of unusable donations, including broken and stained items. In addition to the unusable items, items have been dropped off after store hours and on weekends, left in the rain. IRONWOOD — Twenty-nine fancy young ladies attended the Ironwood Carnegie Library’s fourth annual Fancy Nancy tea party and story hour Thursday. The party was held in the women’s club rooms on the second floor of the Ironwood Memorial Building, which provided an elegant setting. EAGLE RIVER, Wis. — Vilas County Sheriff Frank Tomlanovich, 61, died Wednesday at his home following a short illness. A news release from the Vilas County Sheriff’s Department said Tomlanovich’s family was by his side. Funeral services are pending. Tomlanovich was employed with Vilas County for 34 years, beginning in 1979 after working for the Eagle River Police Department. HANCOCK (AP) — A big man in Hancock history has a new honor in his Upper Peninsula hometown. The Daily Mining Gazette of Houghton says a monument to “Big Louie” Moilanen was unveiled Wednesday on the first day of FinnFest. The statute stands 8-feet-3-inches tall, which was said to be Moilanen’s height. It’s near the entrance to the Finnish American Heritage Center. SAXON, Wis. — A fatal all-terrain vehicle accident that occurred Tuesday evening at Saxon Harbor is under investigation by the Iron County Sheriff’s Department. The accident involving a Milwaukee area couple occurred around 7 p.m. The brakes on the ATV reportedly failed and the machine went down a cliff on Lake Superior, killing the female passenger and injuring the male driver, 44. MADISON, Wis. — Gogebic Taconite, LLC, has submitted a plan to the Department of Natural Resources outlining five sites where the company is proposing to excavate and sample rock to assess the mineral deposits. The WDNR received a bulk sampling plan June 17 from the company for mining activities related to the Gogebic deposit located near Upson, in the Penokee Range of Ashland and Iron counties. BESSEMER — The 17th annual Relay for Life kicks off on Friday at 1 p.m. at Massie Field in Bessemer. The event runs for 24 hours, ending at 1 p.m. on Saturday. IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP — Black River Harbor Campground is not yet open, pending water testing results, said Lisa Klaus, public affairs officer for the Ottawa National Forest. MADISON, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has denied an appeal from the Bad River Band to stop exploratory drilling near Upson. Late last week, DNR waste management director Ann Coakley said the drilling will continue.
