ONTONAGON — The Ontonagon Area Board of Education Monday agreed to ask for bids on all non-instructional Ontonagon Teacher Education Association schedule B positions. WAKEFIELD — Gogebic County Community Mental Health is planning a “Walk a Mile in My Shoes” rally on Wednesday, May 29, with registration at 10:30 a.m. and the rally beginning at 11 a.m. at the new pavilion at Sunday Lake in Wakefield. HURLEY — Bond was continued at $10,000 cash Monday in Iron County Court for a Kimball, Wis., resident who’s alleged to have threatened to blow up the courthouse. MARENISCO — Michigan Department of Corrections officer Bruce Barthel has been selected as the Ojibway Correctional Facility’s Officer of the Year for 2013. IRONWOOD — Ironwood residents lined up for blocks in the rain Saturday morning to participate in the city of Ironwood’s tenth annual Spring Cleanup. IRONWOOD — Sunday morning a group of seven came to the Miner’s Memorial Heritage Park to plant trees for the third year in a row. This year, Mike Fauerbach donated 200 trees to the effort; 100 white spruce and 100 white pine trees. This year the planting was focused along the SISU ski trail area, as it gets quite windy during cross country skiing, said Monie Shackleford, president of Friends of Miner’s Memorial Park. BESSEMER — Kenneth Wayne Peters, 50, of Bessemer, was sentenced Wednesday to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing his wife, 79-year-old Ethel Grzena-Peters, in August. Peters was found guilty of first-degree murder and second-degree vulnerable adult abuse on May 1 by a jury following a lengthy trial. IRONWOOD — “The only time I missed donating was when I had my knee surgery. Each pint of blood saves three lives,” said blood donor Jean Yurchak at Wednesday’s blood drive at the Ironwood Memorial Building.
