MERCER, Wis. — Despite more than 7,000 miles separating school districts, children in Mercer and China will learn the same curriculum through a Satellite Education Program. Mercer School District Administrator Erik Torkelson attended a meeting in Madison June 1 to discuss the possibility of creating two American schools in China. MONTREAL, Wis. — John Lauzon’s Hobbit House is a work in progress. The resident of 82 Minnesota Ave. in Montreal is an ardent woodcarver, so when a spruce tree in his front yard became potentially dangerous to his house, he hatched the idea of carving a Hobbit haven. “I hated to cut it down and waste wood,” he said. UPSON, Wis. — Gogebic Taconite broke ground Wednesday to begin drilling core samples at the proposed iron ore mine near Upson after crews were obstructed by protesters the day before. Protesters earlier placed large rocks, trees and other obstructions in the roadway to block crews from entering the drill sites. ONTONAGON — The seventh annual Barbecue Cook-off for Life, held Saturday, generated $6,074 for the Ontonagon County Cancer Association. This raises the total amount raised by the event to nearly $40,000. All the funds raised are used to assist Ontonagon County cancer patient with medical expanses. HURLEY — Elementary and middle school students from the Hurley K-12 School took a different route to school Tuesday, participating in the school’s first Walk to School Day. WAKEFIELD — Getting a reservation at Sunday Lake Campground can be a hard thing to do, according to discussion at Monday’s city council meeting in Wakefield. MERCER, Wis. — Saturday was a beautiful day for a bike ride for the 148 riders gathered in Mercer to celebrate Lupine Junefest, despite a lack of lupine this year. Linda and Glen Gilbert from Shawano, Wis., enjoyed their second year at the race on their tandem bicycle. “It’s the only time he listens to me,” Linda Gilbert said from the front of their two-seater.
