  • Past mines didn't disrupt fishing streams

    Feb 8, 2014

To the Editor: We who have lived here all of our lives have seen the huge iron ore stockpiles freshly hauled up from underground waiting to be moved out by railcar bound for the smelters. Left behind to this day are the immense waste rock piles. These ore and rock piles have been subjected to all types of weather systems and all drainage going to the nearest streams and into Lake Superior, about 15 miles to the north. In all the years of mining, this drainage hasn’t affected brook trout fishing on all the rivers flowing into Lake Superior. Broo... Full story

  • Time to salute, thank veterans for service

    Feb 8, 2014

To the Editor: The week of Feb. 9-15 is designated National Salute to Veterans Week. The employees and volunteers at the Oscar G. Johnson Veterans Affairs Medical Medical Center and the Ironwood VA Outpatient Clinic salute America’s heroes — the nearly 20,000 men and women we proudly care for and serve, as well as more than 210 of our employees and 220 of our volunteers who served their country in the military. Men and women who have given more than most to protect and preserve all we hold dear as Americans. Next week, we join VA fac... Full story

  • Michigan's inaugural wolf hunt not justified

    Feb 1, 2014

To the Editor: Last week Adam Bump, of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, claimed 17 of the 23 wolves killed during last fall’s wolf hunt happened in places within known territories of packs repeatedly attacking livestock or pets and exhibiting fearless behavior around people. Once again, the DNR has stretched the facts. Data released this week in response to a Freedom of Information Act request revealed that no wolves were killed near either of the two farms in the U.P. with the greatest livestock losses to wolves. Most wolves k... Full story

  • How did 'one-party system' come to exist?

    Jan 24, 2014

To the Editor: It was a long time ago that former Ironwood Township clerk George Hakala stopped by my Section 12 home. After declining a cup of coffee, he got into his reason for stopping by. “Donald, your dad and two of your uncles have, at one time or another, served on the township board.” Looking into my eyes, he continued: “Would you consider running for the office of trustee? You would have a better than average chance of making it.” Without hesitation, I inquired, “Could I run as an independent?” He sternly stated, “No, it would have to... Full story

  • Volunteers, events make area shine

    Jan 16, 2014

To the Editor: I have had the pleasure to attend many area events in the past few weeks. On behalf of all of the people who organize these events, I would like to give a huge shout out and thank you to each and every one of you that were involved in any way with the area’s events. I keep going back to this, but our area is like none other. We would be considered by other folks’ standards as small, rural communities. I have seen world-class events come to our backyard to play because of the dedication, determination, passion, strength, com... Full story

A milestone donor award was given to Janet Georgi for 11 gallons. Mercer Lioness members are grateful for the donors and volunteers who were involved in this drive, including Ann Bayer, Kathy Perko, LaRane Garrett, Barb Beschta, Lori Ackerman, Betty Meinholz and Dorothy Wahner. The next blood drive will be April 8. —Judy Bugni Blood drive coordinator... Full story

  • January time to honor school board members

    Jan 8, 2014

To the Editor: As citizen leaders, individual school board members face complex and demanding challenges. They are alternately described as having the most important volunteer jobs in the country and facing the toughest challenge in elected American government. Yet school board members are just ordinary citizens with extraordinary dedication to our nation’s public schools. All Michigan citizens should recognize the vital contributions of these men and women and the crucial role they play in the education of our children. Their job is to e... Full story

  • Many thanks offered to St. Vincent de Paul supporters

    Dec 27, 2013

To the Editor: I guess the word is “wow.” Where did year 2013 go? On behalf of the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Ironwood, I would like to thank the following. To the individuals and businesses from area communities that flooded us with donations of clothing, household items, furniture and individuals who made monetary donations in memory of deceased loved ones, thank you. To our “family” of customers, thank you for your purchases, patience standing in what seemed to be a long line at the check-out during busy times, and to some, just fo... Full story

  • Globe offers 'emotional' Veterans Day tribute

    Dec 11, 2013

To the Editor: At one time, I criticized the Daily Globe for their use of the name of a place called America. The name of America is generally followed by misinformation and is used extensively by undisciplined politicians and a few major news media groups who are well versed in manipulating the populace by pitting people against each other. This method does work very well for their short-sighted concerns. My main gripe is that the name of America is being used in a disrespectful way toward the men and women who have served and those who are... Full story

  • More to story of farmer's wolf problems

    Dec 5, 2013

To the Editor: A photo of John Koski walking among cattle bones graced the front page of the Daily Globe Dec. 3 with the caption that he “has the highest number of reported wolf attacks in Michigan.” Although he has lost more livestock to wolves than any other producer, there is far more to the story. Department of Natural Resources records dated Aug. 3, 2012, show at Koski’s Matchwood farm: —The fences are still in horrible need of repair and husbandry practices have not changed. —It is likely carcasses are going unfound each year, violating... Full story

  • Take steps to make holiday travel safer

    Nov 27, 2013

The season of holiday travel is upon us and officials are offering wise words of caution as increased traffic on roadways often brings more accidents. Add a few drinks from the party and/or some bad weather and havoc can ensue, often ending in tragedy. The Michigan State Police, among other organizations, are urging motorists to buckle up and designate a sober driver. “Motorists will soon be flocking to the roadways to visit with family and friends for Thanksgiving celebrations. The combination of increased traffic, deer on the move and the s... Full story

  • Area honors band plays 'impressive' concert

    Nov 27, 2013

To the Editor: I attended the Gogebic Range Honors Band performance on Friday night at the Historic Ironwood Theatre. The students who played were selected by their individual band directors to take part. To say that I was impressed is quite the understatement. Stephen Grugin, an associate professor of music from Northern Michigan University, came to work with the students during the day on an array of music that ran the musical gamut. What the audience listened to was the result of that one day of practice. True, the students did get the music... Full story

  • 'Tis the season for unconditional love

    Nov 27, 2013

To the Editor: The ultimate goal, or mission if you will, of any religion should be to make an adherent feel comfortable in his or her position in the universe. Some early forms of religion relied on the sun, moon and stars. This is not so naive a proposition as one might suppose, for without the warmth of the sun and the tides of the moon, we would not now be having this conversation. Throughout history, geographical realities and cultural considerations resulted in the formation of varied concepts of religion, analogous to the development of... Full story

  • School consolidation could solve many issues

    Nov 23, 2013

To the Editor: In October, a group of citizens in the Bessemer and Wakefield-Marenisco school districts filed a request to begin consolidation proceedings with our state board of education. The state board has recently approved the request to allow circulation of petitions and a ballot in 2014. I’m not speaking on behalf of Bessemer Area Schools. But, as a citizen, I support their efforts. Consolidation is a smart choice because our schools currently have inadequate offerings, ranging from shortcomings in special education to literacy, to s... Full story

  • Donations benefit cancer patients

    Nov 23, 2013

A big thank to the White Thunder Riders of Hurley for the donation of $500 in gas cards to the Road to Recovery. These gas cards help our volunteer drivers take cancer patients to their treatments, no matter where they have to go — from Aspirus Grand View, to Marquette, to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. We have been so lucky with the people and organizations in the area that have kept us supplied with gas cards for the past four years that I have been coordinator of the program. Special thanks also to Mary Beth, a member of the White T... Full story

  • Bessemer school board should survey voters

    Nov 21, 2013

To the Editor: It appears to me that some on the Bessemer Area School Board have their own agenda and want to squash the voice of the voters. Why wouldn’t the Bessemer Area School Board take a survey of the district’s voters to see what direction they wish the board to proceed with before asking for more taxpayer money on a referendum? Not once have the voters of the district been asked what their current opinion on consolidation would be. A survey of voters could answer a lot of questions for the board. • 'Doers of word' desperately needed

    Nov 21, 2013

To the Editor: “What has God ever done for me?,” my brother-in-law Karl asked of me. At the time of his question, I was not aware of a very appropriate Bible passage: “Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. Every good endowment and every gift is from above, coming down from the father of lights, with whom is no variation or shadow of change.” James 1:17 RSV. Karl was a very talented man in both work and play. His ability and earning capacity as a machine shop die maker was equaled by only one other man in the city of Detroit. And as a bowle... Full story

  • Hurley fans show 'awesome' support

    Nov 20, 2013

To the Editor: I would like to take this opportunity to thank and acknowledge all the wonderful people who in some way, big or small, helped to make our football experience memorable Saturday during Hurley’s semifinal game in Wausau, Wis. A big thank you goes to Sharon Ofstad, food service director at Hurley K-12 School, for putting on and sponsoring morning breakfast for our team and the high school band. She was assisted by Natalie Patritto, Spanish teacher; Marcy Kusz from guidance; and our district administrator, Chris Patritto. Thanks g... Full story

  • Obamacare: Freedom or tyranny?

    Nov 13, 2013

To the Editor: Does the White House really expect rational Americans to adhere to their pusillanimous, mean-spirited programs? If a cabal of our servants consisting of senators, judges, attorneys, etc., came to your door and stated that you must buy this unworkable refrigerator from them, even if it is deleterious to you and the entire country, and if you don’t, you will face a fine and imprisonment, would you, under that duress, sign the contract? That’s tantamount to what the greedy Washington types are perpetrating on Americans. They hav... Full story

  • Michigan should reform no fault auto insurance

    Nov 12, 2013

To the Editor: I read recently that all Democrats in the Michigan House and Senate have vowed not to support no fault insurance reform. I would like state Rep. Scott Dianda, D-Calumet, to explain this. On a national level, the Affordable Care Act is now law, which: —Requires every person to carry health insurance. —Eliminates pre-existing conditions. —Eliminates annual caps to health insurance policies. —Eliminates lifetime caps of any kind. —In addition, there are tax credits given to low-income households to ensure everyone can afford th... Full story

  • Hurley American Legion says goodbye to Memorial Building

    Nov 12, 2013

To the Editor: It is with a saddened heart that the Hurley America Legion must bid farewell to our home since 1928. Although the Legion has had a long history with the facilities, poor economic times, declining membership and recent poor turnout of bowling leagues have dealt the final blows to our institutional face. We will still be active, just without a permanent home. I hope the Iron County Memorial Building Renovation Committee has much better luck than did we. So many weddings, anniversaries, graduations, birthdays, a multitude of social... Full story

  • Consolidation or not; maintain or close?

    Nov 8, 2013

To the Editor: America’s schools are adjusting to the decreasing student enrollments. To meet the challenges of enrollment decline, communities across the country will need to find ways to renovate old and outdated facilities. Bessemer schools are fortunate to have experienced a steady or slight increase in student population; however, there are still challenges the Bessemer School District needs to meet. One strategy to meet the challenges of decreased enrollment is consolidation. School districts have been lured by these “consolidated sch... Full story

  • Township board right to make 'hard decisions'

    Nov 5, 2013

To the Editor: I would like to thank the Ironwood Township Board of Trustees for holding the line on spending and making hard decisions to hold our municipal operating millage at 4.2714. Fiscal responsibility sometimes means making hard and painful decisions. Developing a budget that serves the majority of township residents is a huge task. Staying the course and not folding to special interests is a larger task. Recent adjustments to the city of Ironwood library contract is just one issue that exemplifies your resolve. The contract proposal... Full story

  • Government shutdown an 'exercise in stupidity'

    Oct 30, 2013

To the Editor: What has happened in Washington in the last month was nothing more then an exercise in stupidity. Senator Ted Cruz, representing the tea party radicals in the Senate, took the floor of the Senate on Oct. 1 and began his clown show, calling for the appeal of the Affordable Care Act, better know as Obamacare, or else he and the Republicans would shut the government down. President Obama didn’t flinch, informing tea party Republicans that neither he nor the American people would be held hostage by appealing any law, including O... Full story

    Oct 26, 2013

Thank you to all the outstanding supporters of the Friends of the Ironwood Carnegie Library’s recent used book sale. We couldn’t do without these folks. Specifically, we thank Lt. Col. Dave Manki and his Junior ROTC team, and John Begalle and his community service crew, as well as local businesses which helped. Thanks also goes to our community’s used book donors and shoppers. —Bernie DeHut Friends of the Ironwood Carnegie Library... Full story
