  • Cardinals top Gladiators

    Pat Krause|Feb 6, 2016

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco continued its winning ways with a 69-61 victory over Ontonagon in a Copper Mountain Conference match-up in the Cardinal Gym on Friday night. As the season passes it midway point, the Cardinals have answered most of the questions about just how good are they. They now have a sparkling 11-1 record, are firmly entrenched in first place in Porcupine Mountain Division with a a 8-1 record and are coming off solid wins over two good teams in Chassell and Ontonagon. They...

  • Midgettes avenge loss to South Shore, dedicate win to Czarnecki

    Jason Juno|Jan 16, 2016

HURLEY - In a game they dedicated to a former teammate, the Hurley Midgettes rallied to beat South Shore 58-49 Friday night. Hurley shut down a good shooting South Shore team in the second half to avenge a loss earlier this season in Port Wing. The Midgettes dedicated the game to Brittany Czarnecki, who graduated last spring but had a stroke shortly after that. She's still recovering from that, but like she often does, she had a big smile on her face with the entire team gathered around her afte...

  • Snowy Sisu conditions nearly perfect

    Pat Krause|Jan 11, 2016

IRONWOOD — Sisu VII came up lucky seven as weather and skiing conditions were nearly perfect to complete the Sisu Ski Fest on Saturday. No doubt the Sisu deserved a weather break and race director Jonathan Rulesh was only too happy to get it. "Sisu really came off well today," Rulesh said. "It's been real positive and had real good success, no complaints. We were focused on the low snow this year, but the late snow really saved us. The late snow slowed the course down today, but it made the cour...

  • Mercer beats rival Hurley for second straight time

    Jason Juno|Jan 9, 2016

MERCER, Wis. - After going over 11 years without a win over their archrivals to the north, the Mercer Tigers now have a winning streak against Hurley. The Tigers fought off a spirited second-half rally by the Midgettes for a 59-51 win Friday night. Mercer's Caitlyn Hiller had a career-high 34 points, including 20 in the first half when she helped the Tigers to a 28-18 advantage. The Tigers led by as many as 15 points in the second half and Hurley got as close as three points before Mercer closed...

  • Cardinals improve to 5-1 with victory over Red Devils

    Pat Krause|Jan 9, 2016

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco is showing signs it will be a team to be reckoned with in the 2015-16 season. The Cardinals played another good game in defeating Ironwood 71-49 in a non-conference battle before a good-sized crowd in the Cardinal Gym on Friday night. "They're good," Ironwood coach Pete Lewinski said. "They're a much better defensive team and improving on D. They always had high-powered offensive play and now they've become more balanced on offense and defense. They have the...

  • Defending state champs dominate Cardinals

    Jason Juno|Jan 5, 2016

WAKEFIELD — When Wakefield-Marenisco athletic director Mark Lane had a solution for the Cardinals open spot on the schedule, he suggested coach Bruce Mahler sit down before he told him. It was Class C defending state champion Calumet. Mahler didn't hesitate to take the game. Calumet dominated from start to finish, beating the Cardinals 76-25 Monday night. But it wasn’t about the final score for W-M. “It'll make the girls better," W-M coach Bruce Mahler said. "It's not about wins and losses. We have one goal, which is to try to get to a distr...

  • Jets fly by young Speedgirls

    Pat Krause|Dec 19, 2015

BESSEMER - Bessemer wanted to give their fans an early Christmas present, but a good Jeffers team would have no part of it and thumped the Speedgirls 61-31 in a Copper Mountain Conference game in the House of Noise on Friday night. "Bessemer is a good young team that is impressive on the inside and has good coaching," Jeffers coach Joe Romano said. "But they couldn't handle our press, especially early on. Every game, we usually go with a man-to-man press, But Bessemer is tall, so it was zone pre...

  • South Shore escapes Ironwood with five-point win

    Jason Juno|Dec 5, 2015

IRONWOOD - Ironwood proved that focusing a defense on Emily DiGiorgio isn't going to work. The Devils received balanced scoring, but it wasn't enough as Shauna Kavajecz had a monster night, made the game-deciding play in crunch time, and led South Shore to a 68-63 Indianhead Conference victory over Ironwood Friday. The Cardinals beat two conference contenders this week in Hurley and Ironwood, even though Megan Gustafson is playing at Division I Iowa this year instead of Port Wing. The Cardinals...

  • Cardinals stop Speedgirls

    Pat Krause|Dec 5, 2015

WAKEFIELD - Wakefield-Marenisco used a suffocating press and a relentless running game to overcome Bessemer 56-42 in Copper Mountain Conference action on Friday night. "The key was our press-they had a tough time handling it," Cardinal coach Bruce Mahler said. "We went with a full-court press the whole game and when we get the ball we will run all the time. We're a running, pressing team as much as we can. The other key in the game was Rachel Obradovich's defensive play on Rachel Mazurek and...

  • Ellenberger, 'Coach Norm' made a mark in Watersmeet

    Jason Juno|Nov 20, 2015

WATERSMEET — Norm Ellenberger was known nationally as a showman on the sidelines in his early college basketball coaching days. In Watersmeet, he was simply Coach Norm. Ellenberger, who died in his sleep over the weekend at the age of 83, was calmer on the sidelines while coaching the Watersmeet girls basketball team the last four seasons. But the charismatic Ellenberger still had the biggest personality in the room, his passion for and knowledge of basketball remained unmatched and his concern for his players was obvious. What made a good c...

  • Miners wrap up season with win over Red Devils

    Pat Krause|Oct 24, 2015

IRONWOOD - Ironwood saved its best game for last, but the Red Devils still were upended by Gogebic 28-0 in a combination rivalry/homecoming/parent's night season finale held on rain-soaked Friday night. The Miners had been a mystery team this season. They won their first game of the year, lost their next six in a row and then beat a decent Houghton team 38-18 last week. "It has really been an up-and down season," Gogebic coach Mark Movrich said. "We had some kids injured, played some real good...

  • Miners break 6-game losing streak with 20-point win

    Pat Krause|Oct 17, 2015

BESSEMER - Playing in some real football weather on Friday night, Gogebic played its best game of the season and rolled to a 38-18 win in its homecoming game. "It feels good," Gogebic coach Mark Movrich said. "It's been awhile since we won a game. (Aug. 29). I watched a lot of film on Houghton and they gave Lake Linden and Northland Pines tough games. I thought the key was us getting off to a quick start and getting momentum. It would have been easy for us to go through the motions after...

    Jason Juno|Oct 10, 2015

HURLEY - Hurley picked up its fifth straight win and fourth consecutive in shootout fashion 48-34 over North Dickinson Friday night. Both teams tallied more than 400 yards of offense and scored 20 points apiece in a fourth quarter that was a one-possession game until the Midgets iced it with a touchdown with 1:16 to go. • Trojans' quick start dooms Miners

    Oct 10, 2015

CRYSTAL FALLS - Crystal Falls Forest Park built a 14-0 lead in the first two minutes of the game and defeated the Gogebic Miners 30-6 in Great Western Conference action Friday night. Still, the Miners improved defensively and held the Trojans in check after the first two minutes even though Forest Park had standout Dan Nocerini back from injury. "We just competed," Gogebic Mark Movrich said of the defense. "As far as scheme-wise, we didn't do anything different. The kids just competed, which was...

  • Midgets hand Broncos first loss

    Jason Juno|Oct 3, 2015

HARRIS – A three-hour bus ride nor the No. 3-ranked Division 8 team in the Upper Peninsula could stop the Hurley Midgets Friday night. Nothing really is stopping Hurley these days. The Midgets racked up 500 rushing yards on 54 carries and handed host Bark River-Harris its first loss of the season 52-34 Friday night. Hurley won its fourth straight game in the midst of a tough schedule, improved to 6-1 and secured an 18th straight trip to the WIAA postseason. "I thought offensively our kids w...

  • Midgets turn shootout with Miners into blowout

    Jason Juno|Sep 26, 2015

HURLEY - Once defense arrived at Friday's game, it stole the show. The Hurley Midgets, buoyed by two third-quarter takeaways, shut out the Gogebic Miners in the second half for a 54-28 Great Western Conference victory. Gogebic recovered quickly from last week's humbling trip to Lake Linden and led the Midgets 28-27 at the half in a fast-paced shootout. But things quickly went Hurley's way after halftime. "We scuffled a bit in the first half. They were coming really quick downhill, in between...

  • Panthers pounce on Gladiators in OT

    Pat Krause|Sep 26, 2015

ONTONAGON - Ewen-Trout Creek came from behind in the fourth quarter and won its renewed rivalry game against Ontonagon 12-6 in overtime on Friday. "We were down 6-0 most of the game," E-TC coach Larry Maki said of the battle between two Ontonagon County schools. "But the boys didn't quit. We ran a lot of plays and kept plugging away, but we had a tough time for three quarters. That No. 70 for Ontonagon (Logan Jilbert) was a beast. We took the battle of Ontonagon County, and the team and the...

  • Hurley girls, Ironwood boys place second at first Indianhead meet

    Jason Juno|Sep 18, 2015

IRON RIVER, Wis. - The storms stayed away as the Hurley girls and Ironwood boys took second at the first Indianhead Conference cross country meet of the season at Northern Pines Golf Course Thursday. Officials ran the varsity races prior to the junior high races with storms expected, but only a light rain came and went. Washburn defeated Hurley 32-45 in the girls race with South Shore in third with 48 points. Both the Midgettes and Castle Guards had two runners in the top 10, but Washburn placed...

  • Midgets sink in Lake Linden 35-6

    Jason Juno|Sep 8, 2015

LAKE LINDEN - The second quarter couldn't have gone much worse. But really, the whole day was one to forget for Hurley. Lake Linden-Hubbell dominated Hurley for a 35-6 Great Western Conference victory on a steamy Saturday afternoon. "Bottom line is they outplayed us today, big time," Hurley coach Scott Erickson said. The Lakes took control early, scoring 11 first-quarter points off two long and impressive scoring drives where their offensive line took control. But that deficit appeared...

  • Aukee nets hat trick in Devils' win

    Jason Juno|Sep 4, 2015

IRONWOOD TOWNSHIP - Ironwood scored four unanswered goals to defeat Phelps 4-1 in Northern Lights Conference action. The Red Devils overcame a sluggish start as Phelps scored the game's first goal. But Ironwood's Isaac Aukee scored the next three, one in the first half to make it a 1-1 tie at the half, and two more in the second half for a hat trick. Riley Jarocki tallied Ironwood's final goal late. The win puts Ironwood at 2-3 on the year. The Devils beat the Lakeland JV team 9-1 last month...

  • Miners kick off season with rout of Bulldogs

    Pat Krause|Aug 31, 2015

WAKEFIELD - The Gogebic Miners and first-year varsity head coach Mark Movrich started off the season with a convincing 48-7 win over Hancock on Saturday. "I'm definitely glad for the win," Movrich said. "When you win that first game, it's easier to come back to practice and focus on the positive things we did and what we have to do better. "We made some first-game mistakes, but we were able to keep the ball moving and we've got some explosive backs. All too often, a line will just push or lean...

  • Dominating decade: Midgets win 10th straight over Devils

    Jason Juno|Aug 29, 2015

HURLEY - Hurley's 10th straight victory over Ironwood Friday night was its biggest in the impressive run. The Midgets defeated Ironwood 55-6, the 49-point margin of victory eclipsing the 42-point defeats last year and in 2012. Hurley only needed six first downs thanks to short fields from 134 yards on five punt returns and a turnover. The Midgets scored on the first play of the drive twice and had three four-play drives. Every Midget drive started in Ironwood territory in the first half....

ASHLAND, Wis. - The Gogebic Miners cross country program debuted with a fifth-place finish out of 12 teams in the boys race at the Ashland Invitational Thursday. The Miners, a co-op of Bessemer and Wakefield-Marenisco, finished behind some traditional cross country powers, including meet champion Tomahawk, runner-up Chequamegon, third-place Drummond and fourth-place Ashland. Gogebic's Sam Dean finished third overall. The Miners will have to get used to the large-school competition as they will...

  • E-TC strikes first but falls to Pickford

    Pat Krause|Aug 28, 2015

EWEN - Ewen-Trout Creek stormed out to an 14-0 early lead, but Pickford rocked the Panthers by scoring 56 of the next 62 points and won 56-22 in the opening 8-man game of the season on Thursday night. "E-TC was hitting on all cylinders and fought hard the whole game," Pickford head coach Josh Rader said. "We seemed to have a lot of first game nerves, but there was no panic, no worry. The offense calmed down and responded. We had good focus, a good first game and a good victory. It's our first ye...

  • Lady Samsons start season Friday

    Jason Juno|Aug 27, 2015

IRONWOOD - The Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons start the volleyball season with a tournament at Vermilion at Friday and Saturday. Coach Aaron Bender just wishes more players were making the trip than the eight currently on the roster. But the Lady Samsons have a good group of setters and outside hitters to make up for that. "Numbers are down," he said. "It's frustrating. But at the same token, it is what is. These are the girls have committed and have shown their dedication to the game....
