IRONWOOD - The Gogebic Community College Lady Samsons start the volleyball season with a tournament at Vermilion at Friday and Saturday. Coach Aaron Bender just wishes more players were making the trip than the eight currently on the roster. But the Lady Samsons have a good group of setters and outside hitters to make up for that. "Numbers are down," he said. "It's frustrating. But at the same token, it is what is. These are the girls have committed and have shown their dedication to the game....

SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (AP) - Given a third straight chance to finally win a major, Jason Day promised a fight to the finish in the PGA Championship. Turns out the biggest fight was to hold back the tears. Worried that this year might turn out to be a major failure, Day never gave Jordan Spieth or anyone else a chance Sunday. He delivered a record-setting performance at Whistling Straits that brought him a major championship he started to wonder might never happen. Day was in tears before he even...
IRONWOOD — Former head football coach Pat Gallinagh recently gave the Daily Globe sports department a copy of the book Unintended Impact, written by Jim Proebstle. Proebstle tells the gut-wrenching and powerful story of how his brother, Dick, suffered a number of concussions playing high school and college football. The repeated head concussions and sub-concussions caused brain trauma and led to Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE). Many people have never heard of CTE or think a concussion and CTE are the same thing, but they are not. A c...

HURLEY - Ben Schneider came into Saturday's race with a discrete, even human, bib number of 178, rather than the traditional No. 1 for the defending champion. Schneider, a nine-time defending champion coming in, maybe even felt a bit human just this once, battling an Achilles problem at Saturday's 47th annual Paavo Nurmi Marathon. It certainly didn't help the competition any, though. Schneider, 31, of Minneapolis, won the marathon in 2:42:30. Sure, it was his second-slowest Paavo winning time,...

Some 200 golfers and 100 teams along with anyone else associated with the Milakovich seem to like it that way. In other words, why mess with success? But in today's world, change has become a part of our everyday lives. The Gogebic C...
