    Pat Krause|Jul 8, 2015

WAKEFIELD - The Penokee Range All-Star team built a sizable lead in the Little League District 11 boys 11-12 year-old baseball tournament and held on to win 7-6 over Keweenaw on Tuesday night. "We were getting a little nervous at the end," coach Ross Solberg said. "Payton (Solberg) pitched well and had great command. But we have a pitch count in Little League and if he threw one more pitch, he would not have been able to pitch for four days. We also picked it up and played good defense "...

  • Longer games in Wisconsin may favor deeper teams

    Jason Juno|Jun 27, 2015

For one year at least, quarters are out in high school basketball games in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association board voted Thursday to change varsity games from four eight-minute quarters to two 18-minute halves for a one-year trial. JV teams will play two 16-minute halves. The move is expected to help deeper teams because games will be four minutes longer. Games should also have more flow with teams not able to stall for a last-second shot as often. Colleges, clubs and Minnesota high schools already play with halves....

  • Midgets perfect wing T offense with state championship coach

    Jason Juno|Jun 16, 2015

HURLEY - People who run the wing T offense stick together. Zeeland West coach John Shillito, who has won three Michigan High School Athletic Association state championships, came 9.5 hours to help Hurley fine tune its wing T offense. Hurley's version of the deceptive power offense has been doing pretty well on its own in recent years, but the Midgets' coaching staff saw an opportunity to get even better. "We asked him up here to let us have a chance to fine tune some things," Hurley coach Scott...

    Jason Juno|Jun 4, 2015

    Jason Juno|May 28, 2015

PARK FALLS, Wis. - After waiting through an hour, 25 minute thunder and lightning delay, Hurley kept the storm that is the middle of the Chequamegon lineup in check. No. 4 seed Hurley picked up a 6-4 upset of the top-seeded Screaming Eagles in Wednesday's WIAA Division 3 regional semifinal. Whether it was Tianne Kuula robbing Chequamegon's No. 4 hitter of a home run to center or pitcher Gabby Pecotte keeping them off-balance, the Screaming Eagles only scored four or fewer runs for the fourth tim...

From outstanding coaches, to state champions and pro athletes from across generations, the 10 inductees were stars of their respective eras.
